Yes, they should. It would not only help them by assuring a better chance of obtaining a job, it will help society too by lowering crime rates.

We need more educated and hard working people in this country... The Chinese are beating us. One day they will will wake up and free themselves from their communist government. When they do... we better start working...

the problem with America when compared to China is not necessarily that they're smarter it's that they will work cheaper and longer. America if it wants to ever resurface as a respectable power would have to drop the notion that physical labor is evil. Some people simply don't need to go to school for half of their working lives if they don't want to learn. We need to break the notion that 42,000 a year is not a respectable pay because our workforce now is full of people who feel like they have a bad job. How can you do a quality job when you feel like you failed when for many people in other countries your job would be considered a huge success. We don't need any more supervisors and managers we need someone for them to manage. Ask yourself why an apprenticeship is a reality TV show today when it's a great idea. It's better for a child who wants to build houses to learn about materials, their respective costs, and geometry specialized construction than be able to list the life cycle of a cell. Public education is wrong because you're saying that all children will be the same thing when they grow up and that's what kids today are attempting to do. They all have to be lawyers, CEO s, or doctors and many will fail and give up on the way. And please no one say that you can't know what you want to be when you're ten because most of us bend our dreams to fit our culture and end up regretting it on our death beds.

I think it's a good idea to stay in school until you are 18 but only if there are more courses available for people who don't want to do strictly academic subjects. Courses in carpentry, for example, or plumbing could give people practical skills, which are just as important as academic skills. I think it would be better to raise the school leaving age so there are fewer people out on the streets - and why not fine them if they don't turn up? It's much better for them to be in schoo

I support the idea of keeping people in school and getting a good education, but some people have different views. People often prefer academic subjects when they are good at writing and maths, but some of my friends are better at learning a trade. But there are no real courses at schools and colleges for tradespeople and I think that's why a lot of people drop out. It is pushing it a bit to fine people - fair enough if they are sat at home doing nothing, but not if they are at work or doing an apprenticeship.

I think Education should be compulsory until a student reaches 18.

Yes.... this country has been dumbing itself down since the 60s and it's time to reverse the trend!

I think we should have to go to school until we are 18 because we aren't technically an adult, so we shouldn't be able to make a decision that important until we are. Most people under the age of 18 will drop out of high school then highly regret it later. So we should just save oursleves from regretting the rest of our lives...you know?

Side: yes

In my opinion they should so they become something good in life. There are schools that requires you to pass test to graduate and I think its stupid because most of students have great grades but they are required to pass a certain test but then they fail it and drop out. If they would get rid of those test that hold you back, then life for them would be ok.

read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Ryand and if you still think a school that doesn't have to be passed is a good idea then the fact that people like you actually exist terrifies me. Life will not be okay because they will be just as incompetent. You are rewarding the inept and giving the intellectuals no reason to think. That does not make life for anyone okay.

We all know of people who went through all their schooling and come out barely capable of forming a coherent sentence. And then there are also people who are clearly capable of entering tertiary education or skilled employment before they turned 18.

When you can legally leave school should be determined not just by age, but also by the level of education you have attained, say through a school leaving exam.

Most of school is general knowledge you don't really need. Its time wasted because its material forgotten and never built off of. Take for example my German classes I took during high-school, they were required for a honors diploma, not only are they the only reason I didn't receive honors[ :( ] but they are completely useless to me and i will likly never speak a sentence of it again( and if I needed to I would have to get Rosetta stone or something)

Once you have the general knowledge you do actually need, you should be able to graduate and get on with your life. The sooner you can get into college or a good job the better.

No one can restrict a person's right to choice! It is a fundamental right which the state guarantees because a state is formed by the choice of the people. the only time the state restricts this choice is when the person/people concerned infringe on the rights of others. That is why murder is banned and not drinking or smoking despite the health hazards. By dropping out, people harm only themselves an they still will always have a choice of going back to study. They can still learn!

i don't think so, because some kids are intelligent, in which they have the ability to think, understand and solve faster than any other human, these kids take the advantage and go through school's 12 years in 8 to 10 years.

We share concerns about young people who "drop out" of education training or employment at 16, but it is wrong to threaten them with prison and force them to stay in institutions that may have already failed and alienated them. The Government has a duty to all its citizens to only use prison or the threat of it where it is an appropriate and proportionate response to a genuine wrong doing, threat or danger. The Government must end this love affair with the threat of custody.

Large numbers of children stay in education voluntarily well beyond the age of 16. But there are children who are disaffected and disillusioned and end up either unemployed or in dead-end jobs, and it is engaging these children in education that is vital. What needs to happen now is work with industry and commerce, with parents groups and teachers' organisations. We need to look closely at the courses on offer and make sure they are appropriate and meaningful.
