The current state of world affairs would indicate that one of the major contributory factors of economic strength comes from freedom of communication.

Good governance must be totally transparent in its endeavours to achieving equality for all its citizens as meeting this prerequisite will result in a significant reduction in poverty, and the promotion of a fairer society.

As we cannot be observers of good government but should be participants in the process of governance we have little choice at this moment in time but to rely on social media to fullfil this vital public function.

To a certain extent, both.

Governments shouldn't let social media sites host kiddie porn and social media sites shouldn't let governments piss all over civil rights.

Well, as governments need to be monitored and the inevitable corruption of politicians exposed social media outlets could be considered as a suitable platform from which such regulatory activities could be conducted.

Then we come to the inexorable question; who is going to monitor the monitors.

As most News Broadcasters and publishers have developed a bias one way or t'other it would be reasonable to assume the the same political partiality will grow within social media networks, if that hasn't already happened.

However, I consider social media to be the most suitable podium for the populace to go online and announce their opinions on those who have been entrusted with their governance.

If you think about it, if everybody had some powers to regulate everybody else, then life would be much fairer than if just one organisation or person with a disproportionate level of authority was responsible for making all the rules. You'd get a much more even representation of interests.
