If they want to fight and die for their country then let them. Let them fight, 'cause I'm not fighting.

That's right.

Yes, I find no convincing reason for why they shouldn't that isn't based on paranoia or bigotry.

Side: yes

There should not be any discrimination toward homosexuals. They are the same as anyone else.

Side: Yes

I'm a member of the military, and I find it rather disturbing to have homosexuals serving with me. I also know that almost no one (that I have met anyway) is comfortable with it either. What people don't understand is that the vast majority of people in the military are cultural conservatives, and when the civilian powers that be make a decision about how we operate, it seldom goes over well. Mostly because civilians simply don't know what it's like to be in the service. Furthermore, the gays don't know what they are getting themselves into. Serving with homosexuals today would have been as the Negroes serving in the army during segregation. If there was a dangerous job that no one wanted to do, it was the Negro that was ordered to do it. I can see similar things happening with the gays.

I have heard many strait men say that they feel unconfortable around homosexuals...Fine. I have an irrational fear of spiders.

Furthermore, the gays don't know what they are getting themselves into.

Any new member of the military does not truly know what they are getting themselves into.

Mostly because civilians simply don't know what it's like to be in the service.

All soldiers were all civilians once...

Serving with homosexuals today would have been as the Negroes serving in the army during segregation.

Yes, it is. But the very fact that these actions are similar proposes that homosexuals are segregated. Therefore, if segregation was abolished for blacks it should be for homosexuals.

If there was a dangerous job that no one wanted to do, it was the Negro that was ordered to do it.

Yes...So, gays should be ordered to go to war? I believe you are contradicting yourself.

Finally, if gays want to serve their country why stop them? They are proposing to risk their lives for all of us.

It's rationality doesn't matter, the fact is that it exists, and that needs to be taken into consideration. Also, there is a difference between fear and discomfort.

Any new member of the military does not truly know what they are getting themselves into.

it is significantly different when it comes to the gays because they will be discriminated against in some form if they join.

All soldiers were all civilians once...

And when they were civilians, they did not have enough perspective to make a say in what should happen. Yet is seems to be happening anyway, which is where the problem begins.

I never said it should have been abolished for blacks.

Yes...So, gays should be ordered to go to war? I believe you are contradicting yourself.

No, I'm saying if they are in that situation, they will be discriminated against, and they will likely get jobs that are deemed too dangerous for the straight people. Just like blacks would get jobs deemed to dangerous for the white people.

Finally, if gays want to serve their country why stop them? They are proposing to risk their lives for all of us.

Because it is a decision the military should be making, not civilians who have no knowledge of what it is like to serve, or how the military is run.
