If reading is made mandatory, it is no longer a hobby since it becomes a chore. Reading should be done for our own leisure and whenever we are free to do so. So it should not be mandatory for people to read one book a week.

However, I might argue that in this day and age people hardly devote time to leisurely activities...everything they do must have an objective/rationale. Hence, it is getting increasingly difficult for people to maintain healthy reading habits, because they might see it as something they can live without. This is leading to a deep dip in knowledge levels.

How ridiculous? Who is going to enforce this ridiculous mandate? Will be the Department of Reading officers?

But a lot of mandates cannot be monitored and tracked anyway. It's just to encourage reading? And we can always FINE people if they get caught. Maybe we have to do a weekly book review...

If mandates can't be monitored nor tracked, what is the point of mandate? Mandate entails enforcement.

If it's just to encourage reading, then why does the debate title say mandatory? Mandatory means the use of force.

Free people make choices for themselves, and fining people for not reading is laughable. Only central planners think of retarded shit like this.

And even if this could be enforced, which I see as being pretty unlikely, are we going to dictate what they read too? I mean what's to stop them from reading kids books, Stephanie Meyer garbage and the Manuals for their cars?

Side: No

Why are these debates coming up on the homepage? This doesn't even provoke a slight amount of thinking... It was just created by someone who probably doesn't have a job and has a lot of free time. Obviously reading should not be mandatory. Reading a book is a choice that cannot be infringed upon.

I think reading is great but it should'nt be Mandatory that's just daft although I think the idea has it's heart in the right place, I dont think it should be mandatory but should definately be encouraged

Side: No

No! I don't force people to play music or make art every week so why are you going to force people to read?

Side: No

Reading one book per week should not be mandatory. Some people who are working do not have the time to read any books.
