Should kids be able to own pet dogs growing up?

Many kids have asked parents for pet dogs, and sometimes they are refused, other times not. What do you think should be the answer?

When I was 1 years old My Grandmother gave me a bull dog, I grew up with him until we had to put him down at age 14, I was 15... Best dog I ever had.. and a friend while growing up ! I really do not see why a child should not have a dog as a pet?

Yes, I think they should have a pet dog growing up. I had an awesome dog while growing up. She was always with me and would have fought anything that would be a threat to me. I think it teaches kids responsibility to care for a pet.

We learn how to care for animals which might be useful if we want a career in looking after animals. Dogs are great friends and cheer you up if you are upset

I personally believe that having a pet as a child can teach kids responsibility from a young age assuming the parents allow the child to have a part in raising the pup and or any other pet. They can easily become one of the family and can easily become an amazing companion which adds a lot to life in my opinion. I personally had to put down the first dog I ever had just this last summer, it was of course heart wrenching though the time I had with my pup will always bring good memories. The experience of having a pet is a great thing in my opinion, assuming they and the child are raised in a respectable manner.

Dogs are great protection, and if a child was kidnapped while they were with the dog, finding the dog alone would be a warning to let the parents know that their child is in danger.

Owning a dog teaches children how to love and have responsibility.

The level of responsibility required to support a dog, especially as a puppy, is too large for most children. However, shared responsibility between children and parents would be sustainable.

Kids should have practical pets like bunnies and chickens. That's the kind of pets I had when I was growing up. Then, when they get big enough, you eat them. You can't do that with a dog. At least not in America. Hell, you can't even do it where I come from. But bunnies and chickens are OK. Hey...., I didn't make the rules. I just asked them to pass me the gravy ;)

Alright, but this video proves that dogs can be happy around people. Do you notice all the people in the video are SMILING and having a good time? Dogs are good for everyone.
