English is spoken over such a huge area of North America that I think it is sometimes understandable that not more Americans are bilingual... in many other places in the world different languages are spoken all around you so it makes sense that people in Europe, for example, would want or need to know the language of those in a neighboring country. Having said that I do think more Americans should be bilingual... in fact a second language should be taught in school at a very early age. Side: Yes!
Pretty fair analysis. And indeed, the language training should begin very early, as it is easier for human minds to learn languages before our brains have fully developed. Although immersion training is the best for learning and remembering a language, and that is unfortunately pretty hard to come by in most parts of the US. Side: Yes!

Yes. America is not the center of the world, even if plenty of people speak English. We should try to meet them halfway. Additionally, learning another language is enormously beneficial - it improves your linguistic skills overall and changes the way you think for the better. Language is an offshoot of thinking, and more ways of learning to speak/communicate translates to more ways of being to able to think and articulate a position. Bilingualism makes you smarter.
