Should school be longer?

I tink it shouldn`t because i just won a debate on it!! what do you think?

of course people are going to say no because they don't want more school.

If we could fix our education system it would be beneficial. If we ever want to compete with the rest of the world in math and science we(US) will have to. The US ranks 10th in terms of math scores. We have our kids in school for 180 days and the average math score amongst 15 year olds is 474 with 1080 total instructional hours. While kids in South Korea spend 204 days in school and the average math score for 15 years olds there is 547 with only 545 instructional hours.

I am a 5th grade student attending the Gifted and Talented Program at a public school and thanks to a program called Prep For Prep (150 people get in out of 10,000) I am being sent to private school with a scholarship, and to a great college with a scholarship. Yes, school is very important. Here is why and this is the chain supporting detail:

1. School -- Job -- Money -- Basic Needs of Survival -- Surplus -- Great Life

That is the basic factor of life. Without it, it would end like this:

1. No school-- Bad Job-- Low on Money-- 3/4 of Basic Survival-- No Surplus-- Bad Life

This is why a good education is important. School should be longer so the line can be like this:

1. School -- Fantastic Job -- Billionaire -- 4/4 Basic Needs of Survival and Advanced Needs of Survival -- Many Surplus -- Fantastic Life

I suppose you consider master-bating your ego as some sort of qualification and that gives you some kind of authority on this topic. Otherwise, there was no reason to write that first paragraph. =/

You seem skilled with linguistics for your age but not yet at the stage where you can form abstract thought outside of what adults have told you.

Hate to break it to you, but spending more time in school doesn't guarantee you a better job and more money. Spending more time in school only guarantees that you'll spend more time in school.

I hate to break it to you, but most of what you said makes no sense. Yes, you are right about spending more time in school just means spending more time in school. But your wrong in everything else. If you spend more time in school, you earn more than just the basic curriculum so you can get a good education rather than a taxi driver which you probably want to be considering you wrote that.

No, it makes perfect sense. You just don't like that I called you out on your bragging. ;)

You assume that the current school system is the best possible set up for education. To which you have logically concluded that the more time spent in school, the more educated and thus better job you can get. The thing is, the current school system is crap and I blame it on the fact that the government has forced a coercive monopoly on schools. Even private schools must be regulated by them and thus you learn just what they want you to think, for example believing we need a government or else society will fall apart.

but even in a perfect world with perfect schools, your quality of life depends on you, not some piece of paper. You can be a hobo with a PHD, you can be a millionaire with nothing but a sixth grade education.

The way you argue is very foolish. You are wrong in everything you said but with my prediction, your probably just a snotty stuck up kid who always thinks hes right, right? Well, then use common sense for once because I'm going to change your world upside down and around.

First of all, a rich person can't have a sixth grade education unless they inherited the money. However, without class and a proper education, that money could easily be wasted and can run out sooner or later. Besides, it will run out and then your grandsons will curse your name for being an idiot and wasting all your money.

Next, if your a hobo with a PHD, well then your stupid. With a PHD you get a degree and that helps you with your job. However, listening to common sense, your all wrong. Only a lazy person who wastes all his or her money getting drunk will be a hobo with a PHD. How can you get a PHD if you don't get into college? If you get a chance, how can you afford it? Pretty simple that your being stupid.

True, the quality of life comes from the soul rather than a paper, but face it, will your "personality" get you a job, a home, food, water, clothes and surplus? NO!!! No one gives a damn about your "personality" except your friends which you won't have because they will be high in class with jobs, homes, children, they will be married, have good food and excellent clothes with a lot of surplus and you will be sitting in a sofa with a beer laughing over a sad sit-com.

Really people start using common sense!

Alright, so you're definitely very young as your mind seems to work only in generalizations. Not all hobo's are drunks. Not all doctors are well paid. Not everyone with a college degree can find a job, even one not in their field of work. You can be stupid-rich with very low education. You can be a genius with very low education. You can be stupid with a PHD. All these combinations are possible and are not always (or even usually) predicated on alcoholism or laziness.

Do you understand that? Hell, it doesn't even matter. My point is, the school system is set up horribly. All the "information" and "skills" taught throughout the 12 mandatory years (nearly) every child has to go through could easily be taught in only a couple years by a competent system. Most of the time kids are in school is spent on tedious and pointless activities.

I'm beginning to see you have a strong emotional tie to "getting high education". I assume this has something to do with your up-bringing and you've been told all your life (perhaps not as "point-blank" as this) that you wont have happiness without spending a long time in school overachieving and what not.

Nothing you listed requires high education.

There is one more fallacy you're making. You keep talking about college degrees and getting PHD's. These things aren't available in grade school and high school. If college is so great then why do you want kids to spend longer in grade school? Why not send them off to a college younger so they can actually work on the skills they want to learn. Why not let 11 year old go to school for a degree in plumbing and start their careers at age 14? They certainly are capable. Kids spend so much time doing nothing in school already, why not shorten it, take out all the redundancy and let them go to college sooner?

I'd like to see a personal accountability curriculum added along with an investment class that stresses compounding interest and retirement planning. Work them all year.

Absolutely NOT. Studies show that kids who spend less time at school become more creative and have more fun which is what childhood is about. Also some research suggests that kids learn more outside of school than at school. Much more. Plus think about the increased taxes and the increased stress on the students and school faculty. Not to mention on the parents. So my answer is a big definite NO!!!!!
