Should school uniform be banned?

This is a debate we are going to do in school so I'm posting it on CD to get a few I deas!

Is School uniform a waste of money, individuality and time, or is it worth the scratchy polo shirts and jumpers that are too cold in winter and too hat in summer?

also wearing a jeans won't make me a boy. or wearing a dress won't make me a christian. or wearing a kimono doesn't make me a Japanese. wearing a specific dress doesn't change anything.your clearly dumb to have made assumptions like that =\

In our school, everyone has to wear a uniform and its expensive and useless. It doesn't allow us to express ourselves in what we wear. Having no uniform promotes individuality in the school.

But even with uniform , girls just get shorter and shorter skirts while boys find more ways of wearing their trousers that break the rules. People also wear accessories like sunglasses and necklaces which are also breaking the school rules. I have to admit I am guilty of not wearing my school uniform properly. It would be so much better if everyone could wear what they wanted.

Yes it should, and my first point is Style. Nowadays, in the 21st century environment that we live in, society is based around style. Not just what you wear, but how you wear it, not just what you do, but how you go about it. Fashion is a way for young people to express themselves. Choosing what you wear is like giving the finishing touches, the final details to an amazing piece of art, that part of your appearance that really says who you are. I don’t know about you, but what I really love to see is happiness, and what a better example of this amazing emotion, than watching little kids dancing round in princess dresses or flowery trousers and purple sequin shoes? What pain and depression it must cause for a mother to have to take those off her child, and put on a dull uniform, making her child, HER UNIQUE CHILD look as alike as the other children she can barley recognise her.

Then we come to cost. Living in the credit crunch, I know that is has been such a struggle to pay for, not only new polo shirts, skirts, trousers, the list goes on, but a PE kit! A girl I know has had to buy THREE new uniforms so far and some people have to get even more! My uniform cost me £ and all I got for that £ was .Not only that, but I’ve had to get wellingtons, shoes, a regulation coat and scarf! Even new regulation hair bobbles and socks. This is an outrageous waste of money! Yes, the opposition may say that normal clothes cost more, but if a parent can monitor the cash we spend on school uniform, of course they would do the same for ordinary clothes! Besides, even if you did spend more money, at least it would buy you comfort. Who doesn’t freeze in winter, and sweat in summer like normal humans? Whoever doesn’t feel the English change of weather can’t be human! Some people get rashes from scratchy polo shirts.

One more reason is formality. School uniform was invented to make us all look neat and tidy. But does it? Despite various random checks, skirts are shrinking, trousers becoming tighter, make-up and jewellery is being worn, and why? Isn’t it obvious that this is our fellow students crying out? They don’t want uniform. They don’t want scratchy polo shirts. What is neat anyway about a sweating pupil with fluff clinging to their t-shirt from the jumpers? Who wants to see a school full of kids looking miserably at their uniforms? No one. Besides, if children are spending money on appropriate clothing for school, it could influence what they buy for leisure time!

Then there is time. Most people take ages to get changes, choose what they want to wear ect ect... so, if children are already in clothes that are not for school, why bother changing? If not, you would have to change from your pyjamas, into your uniform, out of your uniform, into normal clothes, and if your club has a uniform, or you are going to a concert, you change from your normal clothes into those, then, finally, into your pyjamas again. Why have these hassles? Homework itself eats up time, and everyone knows about that, but did anyone think that school uniform would?

School uniform is a ridiculously unaffordable, informal, time wasting part of our school life which strips away individuality and should be abolished.

Thank you

Style - So you want to advocate materialism? You're at school to study. What about when you go to work.. are you going to complain to the bosses that you want to wear the latest and trendiest fashion (lol gay) instead of complying to their standards? You want a job.. you follow the rules. You want to go to school you should follow their rules.

The fact that you define a person's characteristics by their clothing obviously shows you're shallow, stupid, materialistic, stupid, selfish/greedy, stupid and just overall stupid.

she can barley recognise her.

If no mother can recognise her child then she shouldn't be a mother. Simples.

Costs? The fact that fashion means so much to you... you'd be spending vast amounts of money trying to get the best clothing. School uniforms means everybody can spend the same amount of money and doesn't have to worry about outdoing others. They still do, but that's them being stupid rather than anything else.

Formality - It's up to the students to dress appropriately. You've obviously shown you can't do that so you don't deserve the chance to dress 'freely'.

Time? Are you a faggot? You put your underwear on, socks on, trousers, vest, shirt, blazer and shoes on. How fucking long does that take a guy? 5minutes? Girls have to worry about their make up etc. so 30mins max for them. Trying to look good everyday... you know how much longer that'll take you?

School uniform is a ridiculously affordable, formal and time saving part of school life which strips away materialistic individuality and should not be abolished.

I'd like to add that when I was in school I did everything I could to disobey the rules 24/7. In the end though I knew what I was doing was wrong. I didn't sit there and change the rules which I probably knew were good for me.

School uniforms are useless. Science is great isn't it.

It was clear he wasn't saying a person's characteristics is defined by their clothing. Rather He was saying that their individual Clothing is a celebration of their characteristics.

School isn't a job. Even the uniforms at most jobs are pointless and shouldn't be used by employees.

Him saying that a mother could barely recognize her own daughter makes sense, have you ever looked at a group of people from a distance which all wear the same clothing? Also, it can be read metaphorically as well, the uniform stripes her daughter of individual self-expression; stealing away her identity and turning her into just another school child.

Uniforms cost more then most clothing. no one has to worry about out doing others, with or without uniforms. Unique and individualize clothing is usually cheap, for example the hat I'm wearing now is the result of 5 dollars and some markers; its pretty kick ass :) Sometimes Goodwill, yard sales, etc have amazing deals. If someone spends a bunch of money to try and out do the Johnsons, let them. Its their own financial and social stupidity. Uniforms punish those who would otherwise spend less then they cost on cloths. Most of my clothing are handme downs from my older brother, garage sells ect. Uniforms would require me to spend more money then what I normally would.

formality is insulting.

I think it is very important for a child to be creative. I think it is possible for a child to graduate and be creative deficient. I think if a child experiments with clothes, they will find they style and likes. And it raises their confidence and self esteem.

At times i wonder what if we lived in a culture that we shouldn't wear clothes? But as more i think about it, i think the reason why we have to wear clothes is to control our sexual desires. Which is good. I think somebody told me that in Africa, there are tribes that don't wear clothes and that don't sexual crimes like rape and murder. He could be wrong tho. But the question that raises to me over time and time is why do we wear clothes?

Animals don't wear clothes but why do humans. I understand that we have to stay warm in the winter but what about the summer. I understand that this is how it has been from the get go. But i think wearing clothes is America's wear to cover up embarassment. Think about it....why not wear clothes. Tho i think one good reason to wear clothes is to not get diseases.

I think to think like this because i feel wrong. I understand that if i walk around nakes, i would scar somebody as if i see a grown man walking around naked, it would scar me. But that is because this is how our culture is. If our culture didn't wear clothes, we wouldn't go "ugh." I wish we had it both ways because i don't think not wearing clothes is wrong.

Equality(of human worth, dignity, rights etc) among diversity is a given(or should be self-evident), diversity does not need to be lowered to highlight equality. Actually, uniforms highlight the inequality between students and non-students. If uniforms are used as part of a ranking system they highlight inequality between students themselves. Equality among diversity is the only equality worth having, equality among similarity is forced, contrived, and just plain evil. This is because the Similarity would be forced, contrived, and thus is an assault on a persons sovereignty and an imperialistic attack upon a persons identity.

We need to know if there are intruders. How would we know if everyone had different clothes. We wouldn't know who is a foe or friend.

Well, you can give a pass or something to put on as part saying to put it on so they know if they are students or intruders. And, by the way, someone can go to a school uniform shop and buy a uniform for themselves and not be a students? Either way you don't know, see?

Side: Of course!

A school uniform takes the guesswork out of what a student has to wear to school.
