Should schools be banning students from practicing extreme sports such as parkour?

They should ban it.

Parkour may be cool and fun, but it is also a dangerous sport. One could get injured/hurt while practicing it and not doing the technique right. It's best to have an expert/coach to be there while you're practicing, but he may not give you 100% attention sometimes.

If you hurt yourself in school, the school would be blame for not having a safety rule and the school would be at loss even though it's your own fault doing the sport without supervision. Furthermore, you could break a bone or injure an organ in your body.

Parkour may be cool and fun, but it is also a dangerous sport.

All sports involve some degree of danger. Furthermore, life is dangerous; life is fun and interesting. So is parkour. To ban parkour, which constitutes risk in the pursuit of merriment and diversion, is to ban the very essence of human endeavour.

One could get injured/hurt while practicing it and not doing the technique right.

What is the difference between injured and being hurt?

Most endeavours are pursued improperly at first. But we ask you, how can one learn if one never practices?

It's best to have an expert/coach to be there while you're practicing, but he may not give you 100% attention sometimes.

If it is banned, why would a coach need to be provided?

If you hurt yourself in school, the school would be blame for not having a safety rule and the school would be at loss even though it's your own fault doing the sport

Easily evaded by making the students sign away their right to insurance coverage if the injury is acquired during parkour.

Furthermore, you could break a bone or injure an organ in your body.

Unless one is climbing in a church, what other form of organ would one break?

If a person is walking in the halls and slips n a wet floor the school is responsible. Whats the difference? All injuries this person you are disputing has listed and all arguments are arguments that could be made towards banning ALL school sports. But no one does because EVERY athlete in EVERY sport (extreme or not) goes into that sport knowing that there is a risk of injury. Therefore it is that person's choice and no one else's.

Then ban it as an un-organised sport. Some schools teach parkour in PE, or as an extracurricular, and it is therefore fully insured.

even as an orginaized sport it would be fully ensured so whats the point in banning it. This whole debate is about over protective parents who want to take all joy and risk out of life cause god forbid thier kid be exposed to any sort of pain. A parent while beat his kid but won't let them skateboard. Anyone who is for the banning of this sport is an overprotective pussy who wants their kid to grow to be a failure at life cause his parents fucking sheltered them.

Yes, schools should ban students from practicing parkour. It is an extreme sport which is very dangerous. School is known as a "second home" and it is supposed to be somewhere where you will be safe. Thus, these sports are very dangerous and you might actually hurt yourself.

More people are hurt DAILY by playing schooled sponsored sports than they are parkour. I personally practice parkour and find it no more dangerous than when i played football and was running full speed with a guy 300 pounds heavier than me standing in my way. Yes you wear protection in most sports but really and truly it doesn't help that much. i have had WAY more injuries in Football, track, and baseball than i have parkour.

In a way , they should ban pupils from practicing parkour in school as it is dangerous and the school will be held liable . But they have no right to stop students from practicing parkour outside of school provided they are under professional supervision .

there is no such thing as Professional supervision when it comes to parkour. it is a self taught sport which you learn from doing it and failing. when you fail you practice and get better.

No, of course not, Firstly, where do you draw the "dangerous" line? Do you draw it at parkour, or do you draw it at football or rugby?

Are they talking about banning students from doing things outside school, or in it? If it is outside school, then they have no right to interfere. For instance, what if a child's father wind surfs, and they have also done so since a young age? Should they be stopped from doing so because the school says so?

The propersition is ludicrous.

It would be practical to ban students from practising dangerous sports at school, since schools may have to take responsibility if students get injured.

But what sports students get involved in out of school hours should be none of the school's business - that's something for students and their parents to decide.

No. Parkour has lower injury rates than any other sport, due to the fact that people, as they grow more experienced in it, learn their limits and do not rush headlong into something stupid. We work our way up to goals, and we take pride in the accomplishment of a goal. Parkour is not simply a sport, it is a way of going through life. The mindset it teaches is that any obstacle can be overcome, so long as you have the will and determination to persevere. Why, then, should these valuable life lessons be withheld from the youth? By all means, it should be embraced. When someone practices parkour safely and in a way where they have control over all they do, there is virtually no risk in it.

I have posted a link to a very good documentary by practitioners on the subject. I suggest all who want parkour banned watch all four parts.

First off: parkour is NOT an extreme sport. It is a discipline, much like the martial arts. It was derived from the French military's "parcours du combattant", an obstacle course designed to teach soldiers how to get from point A to point B as efficiently and safely as possible. This would involve vaulting over obstacles, jumping to small landing areas (rails, tiny ledges, etc.), and taking drops that some people would think is dangerous (usually around 8-12 feet).

Secondly: It's only dangerous if one practices incorrectly. It is highly frowned upon in the parkour community for practitioners to take huge drops (such as 20 feet), do monstrous flips, or jump building to building. In fact, a study was done at a renown parkour academy, and they found that there was an average of two injuries per thousand hours of training. Compare that to four injuries per thousand hours in soccer, and 7.6 in American football. I couldn't find any numbers right off for cheerleading, but it's widely known that cheerleading is among the more dangerous sports. Parkour really isn't dangerous, and all the videos on Youtube of people jumping from building to building? They may get loads of support from people who don't participate, but those of us that do shudder at those videos. The risk vs reward factor just isn't in their favor.

What makes parkour so dangerous? I believe (as a practitioner, a sponsored athlete, and somebody who's convinced the police force in my town that it's NOT dangerous) that the biggest reason people have a problem with it is that they don't understand it. When we jump from one rail to another, we're not thinking "oh gosh, what if I miss?". We're thinking "jump in an arch, land on the balls of the feet, bend knees to absorb the landing". When we do a flip, we're not worried we're going to slip and break our neck. We think "set high, tuck tight, open up and land on the toes". We don't go out on day one and just throw this stuff with hopes of landing it. We take our time, progress at a reasonable rate, and let things come naturally until these movements become second nature.

Now, of course there are injuries. What physical activity doesn't have injuries? But why would it be okay for cheerleaders and and gymnasts to practice what they do and for traceurs (parkour practitioners) to be banned from training? A big argument is that we don't train in gyms, or padded safe areas. I find this a GOOD thing! We will only do things that we know we'll be safe doing. We're used to the concrete outside, and found ways to adapt to almost any situation. If, in the off chance, something goes wrong, we know how to avoid major injuries ("You must learn to fall before you can learn to fly"). If you put us in a padded, mat filled gym, we have a sense of safety, and feel that we can try things we don't know if we'll land. Why do you think gymnasts and tumblers have such a high injury rate? It's because they feel safe in the gym, that the risk of injury is minor. I teach gymnastics and tumbling, and play in the gym after hours all the time with my parkour group. 90% of the injuries I've seen with traceurs occur in the gym. Outside, the worst injury I've seen was a sprained ankle. Inside the gym, in the past year alone, I've seen a broken ankle, several concussions, a broken nose, and multiple twisted/sprained ankles.

Parkour is NOT as dangerous as people would believe. It comes from a lack of understanding what we do. We're not adrenaline junkies with a death wish. We're athletes participating in a discipline derived from the military. The last thing traceurs want is for our discipline to be looked at as "the next skateboarding". We train our bodies and minds to prepare for the activities we participate in, and to say that it's "too dangerous" while allowing football and cheerleading to continue would be hypocritical.

Banning will do nothing but further create curiosity in other students. Banning will only lead it to underground practice. Parlour will not disappear because some bureaucrat banned it.

They shouldn't ban parkour in schools or out because even though it is dangerous it is a sport and it is my favourite and it is a hobby of mine and even if you ban it I will carry on doing what I love (parkour) because I'm savage like that.
