Should self defense lessons be compulsory in schools?

Considering the fact that bullying will never cease to exist so long as humanity is flawed, it is quintessential that children know how to defend themselves. And for children that are weaker then others, they should be given extended lessons on self defense so they are not outmatched against any bullies who may be stronger then they but also educated in self defense.

Yes since this world is becoming increasingly more dangerous. There are 13000 murders each year in the US alone. Also i would assume they would be taught in High School, and women should be taught especially because men might want to take advantage of them. Although I recognize the down sides to this the pros out weigh the cons.

Side: Yes

Yes these are indeed quite useful especially for the children. Drug syndicates usually tend to traffic young and defenseless children to do their dirty work. Thus if a child can defend himself he would`t succumb to such fate. Self defense lessons also encourages physical activity to a person thus living a healthier life. Having an active body increases brain power and also releases endorphin that reduces stress. So there is`t much any drawback here.

There's a drug syndicate trafficing defenseless children to do their dirty work? Why not just deal with the cartel instead? The drawback of what you're proposing is the definition of self defense. Kids, especially teenagers would end up hurt or in juvie. What if there's a violent "problem-child", should he be tought self-defense on a compulsory basis?

Defense and attack are completely different. Knowledge of how to properly defend yourself is really important, unlike things like history, netball and bible studies. It's also less dangerous. I'm not proposing that we teach children how to attack each other.

Well there are multiple benefits of self defense. It is also target to all audiences. Young girls living in the slums are usually kidnapped and trafficked to prostitution. If she knows self-defense, she can momentarily get away from the kidnapper and ask for help. Same goes for any kind of kidnapping and child abuse.

If the problem is the child then right before the lesson he or she must be given counseling. If there are improvements, then he or she can take some classes. But if signs show he or she will only use it for evil purposes, then its not for them. Self-defense class is different from war-freak class since every teacher reminds the students to use their skills for protection purposes only.

I've just started Jiu Jitsu, and I wish I'd started earlier. You hear so many stories in the news about rape and murder, why can't we have self defense taughtin primary schools?

Side: Yes

Yes I think they should because bullying is common in a lot of schools especially in middle/high schools because that is when people bully the most because I have seen people being bullied a lot at middle school and high school.

Yes, self defense should be a must for students. The world environment today requires self-defence.

Side: Yes

Self defense really has no real world implications except teach self discipline, which is from personal experiences. Martial arts only exists in movies; why do you think the best look for the movies instead of working in law enforcement?

The most effective defense is a weapon like a handgun.

As a for compulsory education, this is a ridiculous notion.

Matter of fact, no subject should be compulsory considering the needs of each individual is different.

Have you ever done self defense classes? Do you know how to stop someone strangling you? Can you block a punch?

A gun is easy enough to deal with.

Side: Yes

Yes, I already stated that I have taken self defense classes in a privately owned circumstance as I already mentioned.

I have never gone for self defence classes. I know how to stop someone from strangling me. I can block a punch. A gun is something I do not want to see. That is why we should not have self defence classes

Side: Yes

I was tought a bit of judo in my compulsory gym class. I think it's great that people have the opportunity to try out different sports. Self-defense on the other hand is a very narrow legally defined term. Teaching kids "self-defense" for use in real situations will only make sure the bullies have wrist control on poor guy as well. On the other hand, if citizens don't feel safe there's a wider problem at hand.

Side: No

I don't think is a subject that should be placed in the school curriculum.
