Should something be done about the DMV?

Department of Motor Vehicles

Whenever you need to go to the DMV, you have to go like 2 hours earlier than it opens just to be seen that day! Some DMV's I've been to, people actually sleep in line because they can't be seen because there is either too many people, or the system that the DMV runs is not efficient enough to handle this many people quickly and efficiently.

As previously stated in the debate description, the system that the DMV uses to process all the people's requests is too slow and needs to be reformed in some way. My personal opinion, is have the DMV automated for the most part, because that way there won't be tons of crowds who get caught up in conversations with the employees, as I saw happen several times today. However, some positions can not be filled by a machine, but rather a more efficient system of working so that the employees can get through the lines quicker, because what seems to be happening is that the employees there have trouble locating everything because of the large amount of people they try to rush through things and lose whatever it is they needed, then they have to hold up the entire like so that they can find that one piece of paper that they lost. If there was more organization, possibly even a sort of assembly line-type system, then the wait time would quarter, if not halve. (And what I mean by an assembly line is that the employees are at a single desk, kind of like bank tellers almost, because what they have now is like 4 employees crouded together helping one person, which really isn't right at all)

Virginia already has the "assembly line" set up that you are describing and it doesn't really help all that much. Maybe it does take away some frustration though. One thing VA does that is awesome: you can view the wait times on the DMV website. This helps a lot because you can keep checking until you find the best time.

PS - I think you're going to be hard pressed to find people willing to argue that the DMV should remain exactly the same!

I suspect the core problem here is lack of competition. Banks are more efficient because you have multiple companies competing with each other. If they are inefficient, they'll lose customers. The DMV doesn't have to deal with that.

Maybe the government should offer the DMV incentives and punishments based on their efficiency. That way they would pushed to implement reforms like the ones you described.

The wait si one problem theo other is hlaf the time they have no clue what you are talking aobut or are very rude to you.

I know that the CA DMV is always a mess. I wouldn't say that it's too big of a problem beyond having to deal with the massive crowds of every ethnicity speaking their own languages, and the HAL like computer screaming numbers constantly... all simultaneously.

I just wish there were more than two facilities for my city of 500,000+ people.

Side: Just add a few touches

That is part of the problem. Two facilities are far too few to handle that many people. Here in CT they've made it easier still. Most renewals and interaction must be done by mail, in fact they don't want you in at all unless absolutely necessary! LOL@ HAL...Don't do that Dave - 2001, a old fave!

Side: Reform

Although I agree with the reform side, the only reason I do is that I've 3 metropolitan areas who have "roaming helper" who direct you to the proper lines in order to move the people along. It works well. If only other states would re-vamp their systems with people who walk and work the room to facilitate the thousands of people who appear there on a weekly basis, we wouldn't need reform.

I've also noticed that when people go to the DMV they suddenly go blind. They don't seem to look above them to ascertain which line they should go to while others look bewildered not knowing what to do first. Those people who stand out front to help are a God send.

Oh yes....the reply ABOVE fully deserves a zero. THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH CD. ANYONE CAN FLOAT THEIR DEFLATED LITTLE EGOS IN HERE AND DO THIS.

I suppose the obvious solution is to show the names of the up/down voters.

I see nothing in your argument that makes me think that the DMV doesn't need to be reformed, however you don't detract anything from your side. Therefore the score is zero, seems appropriate enough to me. That's the point of the the points, to measure how persuasive your arguments are.
