CreateDebate is a social debate community built around ideas, discussion and democracy.
If this is your first time checking out a debate, here are some quick tips to help get you started:
Arguments with the highest score are displayed first.
Argument replies (both in favor and in opposition) are displayed below the original argument.
To follow along, you may find it helpful to show and hide the replies displayed below each argument.
To vote for an argument, use these icons:
You have the power to cast exactly one vote (either up or down) for each argument.
Once you vote, the icon will become grayed out and the argument's score will change.
Yes, you can change your vote.
Debate scores, side scores and tag scores are automatically calculated by an algorithm that primarily takes argument scores into account.
All scores are updated in real-time.

That's basically saying we should ban almost all of TV because so much of it is "pointless". Most shows do not have a "point", they are there for entertainment purposes.
How would that users mom sound like an idiot? If she found it pointless then why show it to the child? If you don't gain something worth while then what are you doing?
I guess so. Wait, how did you post below 50 characters? You only have 17. It didn't let me post "I guess so" by itself. Is it because you have more points than I do?
Not everything has to be a learning activity. It is healthy for a child to be able to exercise their own preferences, especially when there is no harm to him. Being prohibited from doing things that mummy thinks are 'pointless', for no other reason than that, is unhealthy to the child.
Then that's your answer. The parent may want to only give the child learning activities. Some parents do that. That doesn't make them idiots.
I don't see how it's mandatory to give the child preferences anyhow. They should just watch what their parents want them to watch. It's their style of parenting. It's not unhealthy to the child to make them watch educational programs.
The parent may want to only give the child learning activities.
That isn't what I'd deduce from what he said. He said that his mum wouldn't let him watch Spongebob because it is pointless. If he was only allowed to watch educational program then he would have mentioned that he couldn't watch 99% of cartoons; it wouldn't be worth mentioning Spongebob as 'pointless' at all because nearly everything he could want to watch would have been 'pointless' if it merely meant noneducational.

I was saying it as a general concept. If you stop a child doing anything that the parents see as 'pointless' you would soon end up with a very confused and potentially damaged child.
Yeah, but I was speaking in the sense of some parents in general, not his in particular.

I see. Whereas I was just insulting his mum :P
How does it damage the child?
Children develop their own likes and dislikes by trying things out. When they find what they like and dislike they need to be able feel secure in expressing these preferences. It is a question of developing confidence. A child that is constantly told that everything they like is pointless is an unhappy child.

I don't think this is necessarily a valid deduction. It may be true, but this debate wasn't written about cartoons in general, it was written specifically about Spongebob. His mother may well have considered 99% of cartoons to be pointless, and he simply didn't note that due to this debate not being about, say, Ren and Stimpy or Futurama.
You know, that's a good point. I always considered the unmodified term 'clock' to refer to a device that kept time mechanically via clockwork, with the need to specify 'digital clock' to indicate an electronic version. But given the ubiquity of digital clocks and the relative rarity of clockwork these days, that's probably not the most solid assumption anymore.
That never happens. Everyday and everywhere I go I see kids hanging out a window playing their ukeleles and singing with intentionally annoying pitches and tones.
Kids are always blowing bubbles in my mutha fucking eyes when I'm in Walmart and their parents don't even do shit about it. The parents just say, "it is ok, its just a black man."
This problem wouldn't exist if spongebob and BET was canceled.
To broad of an assumption, he meant that because a lot of the prejudgment of blacks come from BET and the fondness of blowing bubbles in ones face comes from SpongeBob, then it would be suggested that these two 'creators of discomfort and evil' be eradicated.
I think most of us can agree that children don't learn life lessons from fictional cartoons. Kids know that sponges and starfish can't talk and that if they jumped off a cliff they would die.
O come on , are you really going to tell someone to cancel a show because it annoys you . There is this great new device called a remote , not sure if you have heard of it . It can , and you won't believe this , change the channel so you don't have to watch shows you don't want to . It's crazy I know , what will technology do next .
I meant that the show could be so annoying and possibly teaching kids annoying things (To clear it up, I'm not for or against SpongeBob) and today people might sign petitions. I don't know. I created this debate for fun, to see what people think of SpongeBob.
In your attempt of comical high-flatulent grammar and complex syntax, you fail.
His show needs to be decommissioned effective immediately!
I think you meant: "His show needs to effectively be decommissioned immediately!"
Plankton does not exhibit such fallibilities such as that absurd syntactical incorrectness. This eradicates my almost-found comedic view of your portrayal. Basically, BOO YOU STINK!!!!
T.v doesn't change who you are. You change who you are. Don't blame the show for teaching children that kind of behavior is okay. I watched the show and here i am fine.
