Should teachers have so much control over students?
Life is full of rules and regulations with employers having dress codes and personal appearance preferences. I feel my confidence in a policeman with long lime green hair, shocking pink tunic top with polka dot trousers and a bone through his nose, would be somewhat diminished. Maybe my judgment could be described as prejudiced, but that's the way of the world and the sooner students learn the necessity to conform to the expected norms of the society in which they live the better. Schools have an image which they want to project and dress code along with personal appearance will form part of how they wish to be perceived by the public at large as well as teaching their students some of life's disciplines. 1

The entire school should be subject to a standard code of conduct (which may or may not include a dress code). Teachers are empowered to administer that standard in their classroom, and if there is a disagreement over whether they are doing so fairly then that should go to the Principle or ultimately the Board to render a verdict upon. Certainly some teachers go too far in wielding their powers, and others not far enough. But what is generally true in schools is a sizeable subgroup of students are willing to test the limits of rules, which is usually what triggers the tougher teachers into becoming so tough. 3

I would like to start on the topic of hair dye. now in my school kids can be suspended for having their hair to bright of a color as it is considered "a distraction" but i feel this is a form of self expression especially in younger kids and teens who are discovering what they want in life. Thoughts? 1
