Should the government change the voting age to 17?

No way. Kids that young are usually politically ignorant. And they are far too easy to manipulate. Like Bernie Sanders tried to do. By promising them free college. Kids that age rarely have a grasp of economics or realpolitik. So a candidate could just promise them the moon--as Sanders did--and they couldn't figure out that there are in reality no free lunches. That somebody, some day, down the line, has to pay for all of these "free" goodies. Few in this world are more selfish or say, self-centered, than a 17 year old American kid. So by promising them something they want they would jump at it with little thought of the long-term consequences. Kids would also vote just for spite--like for example, to cancel out the votes of their parents. This is not how Democracy is supposed to work. Voting age is fine where it is. If anything it should be raised to 21. I think if it HAD been at 21 then we would not have gotten Hussein Obama in office Given how some 50 year olds were caught on national TV not knowing that ObamaCare and the Afforable Care Act were one in the same and made arguements for one and against the other, I say bring back reasonable Literacy Tests for all. At least that way you have some political knowledge before being able to vote 2

I personally believe the government should change the voting age to 21, and move the legal adult age to 21. Your mind is fully developed and matured at that age, so it would be reasonable. Also, these days, we are living longer, so moving the adult age up 3 years won't lessen our adult lives. |
