Should the government change the voting age to 17?

In Israel, then minimum age for voting in the elections for the Knesset is 18.
In the previous elections the National Student Council made a formal petition calling for the Israeli public to support their position to lower the minimum age to vote to the age of 17.

People are hapless and clueless as it is now and taking it to new uncharted territories would be unwise. I think it should be raised, not lowered.

No way.

Kids that young are usually politically ignorant.

And they are far too easy to manipulate.

Like Bernie Sanders tried to do. By promising them free college.

Kids that age rarely have a grasp of economics or realpolitik. So a candidate could just promise them the moon--as Sanders did--and they couldn't figure out that there are in reality no free lunches. That somebody, some day, down the line, has to pay for all of these "free" goodies.

Few in this world are more selfish or say, self-centered, than a 17 year old American kid. So by promising them something they want they would jump at it with little thought of the long-term consequences.

Kids would also vote just for spite--like for example, to cancel out the votes of their parents. This is not how Democracy is supposed to work.

Voting age is fine where it is. If anything it should be raised to 21. I think if it HAD been at 21 then we would not have gotten Hussein Obama in office

as far as America is concerned ... probably should change it to 50 ...

experience a little life and understand what actually makes the Country work

Given how some 50 year olds were caught on national TV not knowing that ObamaCare and the Afforable Care Act were one in the same and made arguements for one and against the other, I say bring back reasonable Literacy Tests for all. At least that way you have some political knowledge before being able to vote

I like the literacy test idea, too and it should be in English only.

Government should change the voting age to 17 ? Then why is it you need to be 18 to 21 to purchase alcohol or tobacco ?

To be honest comparing addictive drugs to political systems isn't a very good comparison. Brains aren't developed enough for alcohol till around 21, and nobody in their right mind would want legal smoking age reduced. That's detrimental in every way.

If the Government is to change the voting age then why not change the buying age for alcohol and tobacco ?

Brains aren't developed enough for cocaine until about 30.

If the voting age was 17, then Sanders would have probably beat the obvious establishment Hillary Clinton. The younger the age, the sooner teens get into politics. Overall i think it would be beneficial, making the young demographic more powerful.

I personally believe the government should change the voting age to 21, and move the legal adult age to 21. Your mind is fully developed and matured at that age, so it would be reasonable. Also, these days, we are living longer, so moving the adult age up 3 years won't lessen our adult lives.

I don't believe that we should let only 17 year olds vote.

They can barley dress themselves.
