Should the govt ban junk food in school?

The number of obese in America has been increasing significantly over the years.. Should we step up and fight for the ban of junk food or sit down and watch as more young people die earlier from heart problems caused by obesity?

Define "junk food" please.

Because, for example, some people will say a cheeseburger is junk. Yet there's still a lot of nutrition in one - protein, carbs, dairy, potentially some veggie from the lettuce and tomato. And that burger could be from McDonald's and full of questionable stuff or it can be like mom makes at home and be quite wholesome. So, junk food or not?

What about potato chips? If you eat only potato chips basically yes that's junk. But if the chips are just a side dish to your burger then it's part of a lunch. Where's the harm in that?

What about salad? Most would say that's healthy, right? But wait. If you put real dressing on it the fat and calorie contents of salad can eclipse a burger. And if the salad isn't made of much more than iceberg lettuce there really isn't even much veggie credit to give to it.

What about pizza? Well just like with burgers there's a full range of junk up to healthy. Depending on the toppings your pizza might be more nutritious than your iceberg lettuce salad with Caesar dressing.

OK. Candybars. Clearly junk, right? Yes, for the most part. But what if someone is diabetic and the candybar they carry around is in case they start to crash? Are you banning that.

Now, separate from traditional junk foods, consider the foods that people on particular diets consider junk.

If you're on an Atkins style diet you want grains and breads to stay away. If that's the person deciding what's junk food then say goodbye to toast and hamburger buns and pasta and half your menu.

If you're on a vegan style diet then anything with animal derived products is junk, including anything with milk or butter.

So seriously, who gets to decide what is junk? And isn't junk, if it's a side dish or dessert, still tolerable?
