i like the idea of getting rid of the others instead of creating a new one very very much but going under the assumption that that is not going to happen would you still be opposed to a male Anglo American history month?
As far as I can tell all the established heritage/history months celebrate the talent, culture and history of these different groups or the good things about them not the bad. Why not celebrate the talent, culture and history of Anglo males. Have they never done anything good? Are they devoid of talent, generosity and strife. My son looks white, he has blond hair hazel eyes pale skin but he has Romanian, Native American, polish Irish and English ancestry. He is like most white American males today and for several generations back are they not good people because their white? Anglo Americans have overcome forms of oppression; our Independence for one thing and the fact that all of them have someone somewhere in their families that has over come some kind of personal oppression to become an American.
examples of anglo american men in our hystory worth celebrating.
Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison and his workshop patented 1,093 inventions. Included in this were the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb, and the motion picture. He was the most famous inventor of his time and his inventions had a huge impact on America's growth and history.
Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. This invention allowed communication to extend to individuals. Before the telephone businesses had to rely on the telegraph.
.
Benjamin Franklin
John D. Rockefeller
Henry Ford
Walt Disney
Ben and Jerry
Charles Lindbergh
Babe Ruth
Elvis Presley
Bill Gates
Clint Eastwood
Howard Hughes
Hugh Hefner
Steven Hawking
Ansel Adams
There are sooooo many more I personally would add to this list.
That to me is the epitomy of anti-racism, by dedicating months to other groups of people we seperate them, seems like a throwback to seperate but equal, which clearly can never actually happen.
Considering Anglo American Males are the murders of millions of people and nearly made another race of human being extinct, I think not. I don't care if they created this country, this country is not worth the near loss of an entire culture of people.
Every race throughout history has hated and killed another group of people at one point in time because of one reason or another. Asian, Arab, African, English, Hispanic, Indian, native American etc... I'm not saying Anglo American males haven't done bad things I'm saying that they have done a lot of good things and deserved to be recognized for those things just like the other groups are.
Every race has fought other races, yes, but made one almost extinct? I think not. The atrocities of white men throughout the past haven't been outweighed yet by their better deeds. The entire reason this country has days for every other race of American is because all other race of American except Anglo men has had to fight for some sort of cultural or societal rights, and they succeeded. Anglo men as a specific group of people have never needed to fight or work for such things.
The assertion that Anglo American males wiped out the native Americans is ridiculous, smallpox did the majority of that with many estimating as high as 90% of the native american population dying as a result.
The destruction of their population was helped by smallpox greatly, I did not void this, but the lack of assistance and the intentional treatment of their culture as primitive and inferior led to their culture nearly being obliterated by settlers that wished to move farther and farther west.
And for the record, smallpox wouldn't have even wiped out so much of the Native American population if Anglo men hadn't invaded Native American territory in the first place!
Considering that Native Americans were either nomadic or had no or very little concept of land ownership we could not invade their territory. Other civilizations have treated people just as poorly if not worse, the near obliteration is due to smallpox. Furthermore this history of racism and hatred is lamented today as wrong by most of these people that you profess are evil. Repentance and change is one of the criteria for being good people.
Right, they had absolutely no territory to invade just because they were honorable enough people to not consider themselves owners of the land despite the fact that they had lived and evolved there for thousands of years and developed an entire culture there that has been almost totally wiped out.
Right. RIGHT. Right. Right...
Also, smallpox was just another weapon of ours to take their land, even if it wasn't intentional; we still exploited it. What we shouldn't have done in the first place is encroach on their territory to the point in which the disease threatened them, but no, the white man NEEDID MAOR LANDZ.
HA! Of course things are different now, you dolt! I'm a white man myself! The point of these race-oriented holidays are to celebrate the PAST of what these races have had to overcome in the face of oppression!
It has nothing to do with the present, and neither did my argument.
Most white people aren't racist at all, and as a whole, they aren't genocide-causing twats anymore... but they were in the past. And that's all that these holidays are about, the past. White people haven't done anything in the past that overlaps their evil and makes their past worth honoring.
This neo-conservative position of shifting blame for the american indian is one im familiar with, i find it disgusting, you have all but obliterated the culture, identity, history, and heritage of a truly noble race of people who had more knowledge, grace, and understanding than anyone american does today.
If you really beleive that the the european settlers were not the cause then nothing i say will change your mind, but i strongly urge you to read "i buried my heart at wounded knee", then make a judgement.
"Furthermore this history of racism and hatred is lamented today as wrong by most of these people "
I don't think thats exactly true, i don't beleive america have really come to terms with it, you're a perfect example of someone still in denial. The fact that you still go to foriegn countries, and carry out acts of genocide, most recently in Iraq where the death tol is at over 1.2 million tells me you have learned nothing except how to carry it more effectively.
Hmmm let's think why this disease was so prevailent. Maybe because the Native peoples were rounded up and put into cramped reservations and camps, they were not given the medical treatment afforded their white contemporaries, and Oh yeah those blankets covered in smallpox given to them by whom ? That is right White men. Interesting?
The working class is not the demographic of male Anglo men. It is the demographic... of the working class! They are two different things. As a whole, Anglo men have not had to fight like other racial/gender demographics have had to fight.
Not when they had slaves, no, they were not fighting for real freedom. They were fighting for the freedom to enslave another race of people and steal the land of/murder another.
And before you get uppity with me about it, Great Britain abolished slavery 50 years before the United States... without any bloodshed. At least, at the time of Revolutionary War, they were goddamn hypocrites.
Native American, African and south American tribes where wiping out each other long before white people came around as well as middle eastern and Mongolian tribes.
They were warring with each other. Destroying each others until entire races of them were 99% extinct? No. Destroying each others culture? No.
Are you really trying to justify the destruction of the Native American population at the hands of Anglo-Saxon settlers? Really? Grow up. That's as idiotic and/or racist as someone trying to justify the Holocaust; you cannot win, and cannot carry on the argument without being one or both of those demographics.
Ran Min (died 352) is mostly known for his famous order to execute all of the Wu Hu.
The Anasazi civilization in the American Southwest was destroyed in a genocide that took place circa 800 AD, suggests a new study.[13] "The history of every one of these peoples [among the North American Indians] is a series of almost incessant struggles with neighboring tribes", Ludwik Krzywicki has observed. In his view the Iroquois 'exterminated' the Erie and 'ravaged' the Illinois
The Vietnamese committed genocide against the Cham people during the 1471 Vietnamese invasion of Champa, ransacking and burning Champa, slaughtering thousands of Cham people, and forcibly assimilating them into Vietnamese culture
Yes thats it keep rationalising it to yourself, its ok we committed genocide cause they would have done the same thing if they had our technology and power.
While this is probably true i find it a sad inditement of your perspective.
We do it is called "Every other month!" No reason not to celebrate different races and cultures. Those are what make our country great. it is all the other holidays and observances that were dictated by the white man. Besides we have Columbus day! A true Anglo/American. Slaughtered, enslaved and forcably converted native peoples, got booted out of the city that he himself founded and ran, and became rich off the backs of the poor. That does sound like typical, Anglo/American history to me!
He is not an Anglo American. He is from Spain, there is a difference. Perhaps WASP would be a better term to describe the target group than Anglo American.
Martin Luther King Cheated on his wife and was basically a hypocrite to his religion but he is worth celebration because of his bravery and vision. Bye the way he has a "Day" and a "month" as dose Cesar Chavez.
Ah so now we cannot celebrate someone for being human? Although Dr. king was not perfect he did change society. He encouraged reform through non-violence in a time when violence was the norm. He created a revolution that changed our country for the better and did its part to heal the scars of the past!
I am not saying that MLK doesn't deserve to be remembered or have a day to celebrate him. What I'm saying is there is no reason for there not to be a month (if we are going to have them at all) to celebrate every culture in American history including Anglo Americans. To celebrate some and not others is discriminatory and actually detrimental to the idea that all men are equal.
How was he a hypocrite? Yes he sinned, but don't we all? Screwing up and straying from the path is not a generalization of his entire life and behavior.
He was a hypocrite because he was an adulterer and a reverend. To preach a way to live to a group of people (as their leader and role model)then to turn around and do the opposite is hypocritical to me. I absolutely know that everyone makes mistakes and I have a lot of respect for MLK. My point was that all groups and individuals are not perfect but they can still do great things and if we are going to celebrate them then lets celebrate them all.
Why would we? We have these heritage days/months to see what the people overcame such as an oppression. Male Anglo Americans haven't overcome any oppressions as a group. Black Americans have overcome racism and slavery, Hispanics have overcome their share of racism and unfairness, and women have beat the oppressions of men. What have Male Anglo Americans overcome? I'd just like to know. Because I can't think of anything.
The point of having months dedicated to minorities is that every month, history or heritage wise, is dedicated to white males; at least the vast, vast majority of every month is.
Nearly every historical figure focused on in schools is a white male. Why should there be a month dedicated specifically to this when it is nearly the whole of it to start with?
I remember in history class learning about the names and order of the presidents. I remember learning about the American wars and key people in them I remember learning about the civil rights movement and key people in that and native American conflict and the key people in that and the Mexican American conflicts and the key figures in that but I would not say that every day was a celebration of the "white man" by any means. Why would what you are taught in school have any baring over this debate anyway. We are educated about some people so they should not be celebrated like others are why? Because their white?
No more should there be an Anglo Heritage Month than a Black History Month. It is ridiculous to dedicate an entire month to something so discriminatory while, at the same time, pushing an agenda of equality.
