Should there be so much internet censorship in schools?

The government blackmails schools and libraries into censorship because the governement refuses to give out federal funding unless they agree to censorship.  This is illegal, and the same thing as a criminal threatening a family for money.  So what is YOUR position.  (please back it up.)

Internet censorship has gone too far. If we were a country in which the government doesn't intervene in our activities, then why does the government require schools and libraries to block the majority, inlcuding legitimately educational materials. I understand the policy regarding the safety of minors on the Internet, but, sheesh, I am a senior in high school and I think we High School seniors should be mature enough to know how to reponsibly use the Internet. I would love to be able to access my e-mail every once and a while in case I should get important messages, and I don't mean "important social networking" messages, I mean legitimately important message, whether it be from the NAVY or other legitimate messages of educational importance.

Anyone who agrees with me should join the NCAC (National Coalition Against Censorship) and we can fight against thes Internet restrictions and keep others from imposing their moral views on us!!

Bellow is the link to the NCAC website. Please, if you have the time, visit the website and join the coalition.

The one at my school has now reached a stage of complete idiocy:

1) Google imaging the word "lions" is filtered due to "swedish pornography"

2) Googling the characters "..." makes your internet shut down

3) One time while researching I was blocked because I had made an attempt to enter a "home-work cheating" site - this is stupid because if it was home work we would be doing it at home.

There are many other cases like this and some when nudity has escaped the school filter system.

But I agree that some sites should be filtered but not the amount at some schools(e.g. mine)

Besides the School Administrators are given too much power and authority. They think they can impose their moral values, principles, and standards on people (particularly me) who don't give a crap about it! Well guess what? They've got another thing coming! D:< This means war!!!

An important concept here is freedom of thought. Oftentimes schools will block forums, where people can share their experiences. This, along with propaganda and such, lead to an opinion influenced by the ideas of the adult that perpetrates the censorship (note the use of the word perpetrate. Censorship is morally wrong) and not by their own ideas and ideas shared with them. In addition, it is not the school's responsibility to keep the students on task. The students have that responsibility. So censorship is technically an attempt to regulate the opinions of children in order to create an ignorant youth.

This is a very complicated issue.

On one hand, I say no because I believe censorship runs counter to the First Amendment protection of freedom of speech and the press, both of which fall under the purview of the Internet.

On the other hand, I would hesitantly say yes because of the case where some second graders in California were caught looking at porn on their school issued iPads. http://dailycaller.com/2015/02/14/guess-what-americas-second-grade-boys-are-using-their-school-issued-ipads-for/

The internet proliferated early on as an aid in universities for the exchange of research and information. In schools it should remain so. Playing games, watching videos, are all legitimate activities but outside school.

I have to disagree. High School Internet filters block virtually anything viewable on the Internet. As long as that nuisance remains in place, not much can be done on the internet, even if your are doing research for a project or a paper. The people, not just the government, should have a say about the content blocked and censored on the internet.

The intent is to reserve school computers for their intended use.

even if your are doing research for a project or a paper.

Any examples?

The people, not just the government, should have a say about the content blocked and censored on the internet.

They do. The administrators of the school choose to censor in order to maintain academic discipline.

I have to agree on some matters i think if high schoolers are doing projects then yes they should be able to do research but if they are doing it to go on facebook and update there status then no they should not be able to do that. I am a freshman and we can just as mature as seniors on a computer. I think the government and teachers have rights to censor the websites.

Why exactly would you let students freely roam the Internet, with no restrictions?

There should be censorship because otherwise, students can access material that is of bad influence to them. The censorship covers sites such as face-book, twitter and other social networking sites. This is perfectly legitimate as these sites are not safe. While students can access it from home, they should not be allowed to do so at school. They go to school to learn, not to update statuses.

Since I am a high school senior I think I would know how to reposnibly use the internet. It isn't fair that teachers and counselors can get to Yahoo! Mail and check their messages and that I cannot. What is up with that? So I strongly disagree with you. Those immature little Middle School, and Elementary School kids and High School Freshman, considering they are at a lower maturity level, are the ones who should be censored from internet content, not me! I am a responsible young adult and DEMAND FREE USE OF THE INTERNET WITH LITTLE TO NO INTERVENTION! D:<

Middle school and elementary school possibly. But entering high school is when maturity increases and freshmen are perfectly capable of being mature.
