Should unhealthy foods be banned from schools?

Hi, I just wanted to practice for a debate i'm going to have against a girl and I don't know which side i'm going to be until the night before, so I just wanted to prepare for both sides.

Obesity can lead to diabetes. In the UK it is predicted that over 20% of 2-15 year olds will be obese by 2010.

...how does one predict what happened in the past? o_O

Schools can introduce children into eating healthier. They can do this by teaching Food Science.

Schools wouldn't want to give out free cigarettes, so why would they want to give out unhealthy foods?

Side: should be banned

Even if you offer both unhealthy foods and a healthy alternative, you can't trust most adolescents to make the right decision. Furthermore, sometimes school lunches are the only time a kid will be able to eat until that night, and plenty of kids are happy to go for a snack bag of chips or cheesy breadsticks as their entire meal. Nutrition has been shown to be fundamental not only for good health but also extremely impactful on an individual's ability to learn and think to the best of his or her ability.

I'm kind of eh about completely banning unhealthy food, we need to learn discipline to control ourselves and say no.

But, my school at least, charges you money for getting extra fruit. T_T I can't get another scoop of peaches, or peaches and an apple, and I think that's really ridiculous. Especially considering the french fries come free with the meal.

I understand the importance of instilling discipline in students, but at the same time...we don't offer them cigarettes or alcohol and say "Use your best judgment kids - and if that turns out to be faulty (no doubt due to your still-developing brains), at least you'll learn the consequences of this behavior firsthand and hopefully keep away in the future." See my point?

But don't need cigarettes. You need food, and the proper judgment to eat how much of a certain food.

It should be taught to children that there is no such thing as 'unhealthy' food and that everything should be taken in moderation. The growing obesity problem within this country is not soully to do with calorie laden food but to do with the amount of exercise that children are getting. I have my own food issues but I believe that children should not be limited but educated better and given tasty treats be that chips and chocolate or fruit and vegetables so that they can make these decisions in adult life.

Nah. Let the kids eat what they wish. Besides, if they take away unhealthy food, then that means no more Doritos and I love Doritos :)

Keeping unhealthy foods in school would help because it would provide more physical activities or field trips that children wouldn't usually go on. The school would get money from the vending machines they put out.

Yeah, because if kids go on physical field trips, they can get more fit and burn off more calories.

Obesity is a growing problem. But the way to solve it is not to limit the amount of food because they will just fill up with unhealthy food outside of school.

No one can tell you what to eat or what not to eat besides im 13 and im very healthy for my age and I eat alot of junk food and at the same time I eat alot of healthy foods besides havent you heard the old saying to much of a good thing is a bad thing that goes for healthy foods to.

No! People are getting a little carried away with this shit... where does it stop?

they shouldnt be banned because your still going to have to make those choices out of school whether or not to eat healthy. so in school they should at least give you the chance to make that decision for you prepared later in life.

Kids like junk food and junk food makes them happy. I don't want to see their happiness taken away from them.
