Should voting be mandatory?

Absolutely not. We in North America live in nations where we are free to make our own decisions, as guaranteed by the Constitution in the United States and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Canada; we should not be forced to do anything. If voting was mandatory, all that would happen is idiots, who don’t care, don’t inform themselves, would vote for whomever; they wouldn’t take things seriously, and would only mess things up for the rest of us. Our ancestors, and many people of this generation, fought so that we could be free, and when a government forces their citizens to do something, even if it is something like voting, is, strangely enough, taking away a freedom.

And increase the number of ignorant votes that are cast? No, thank you.

What makes you think making voting mandatory will necessarily make the voter cast a more informed vote? Who's to say they won't just vote for anybody to get it over with? This is absurd.

I think you have misunderstood me, seeing as that was my point.

I agree with the no. People should have a choice to vote.

I think it shouldnt be mandatory because if you just require people to vote, then it would clearly be not what they wanted. Hence, they would make a decision that would just give for the purpose and not because its what they think is right

Side: No

Voting is a privilege. No Government should coerce their citizens to vote.

Side: No

Didn't seem fair to leave this column blank :p

To what end are you asking this question?

The current political regime allows for "we are free to choose between 2-4 candidates (depending on country) put forth before us that 99.999%(ish) of the population doesn't know personally". IF a group wanted to manipulate this system, they need only groom liers to run and back them financially (yes I know it wouldn't ever happen in a million years, just a hypothetical ^_^).

Those that care, vote. Those that don't, don't. It either matters

or it doesn't.

Side: Yes

I'm adding an argument here, even though I don't truly believe in it, just putting in an idea.

The idea of the voting system when it was created was that everyone gets a voice, and the people elect who they want. If not everyone votes, then this system is ruined, as the elections do not show an accurate representation of what the people want to have happen. If you don't vote, you aren't making the election a show of what the people want.

There are so many people though who are apathetic, they don’t take any notice, and they don’t care if their voice is heard; frankly, most of those people probably don’t want a voice anyway, just something else to have to do. Voting is to give those people who care and want a voice to have an opportunity to participate in our nation’s governance, if people don’t care, why should they be forced into it?

I have an idea. Make voting mandatory, but have "none of the above"(NOTA) on each ballot. If NOTA gets a plurality, then those candidates are ineligible for office until next term (including incumbents, who must vacate the office) and a new election, with new candidates must be held, until someone who is worth a crap (gets a plurality or majority) runs. This would be the equivalent of a confidence vote, instead of an "I'm better than the challenger" vote, for incumbents, making it difficult to be a career politician.
