Do you think that we should privatize the jails and prison system considering the state of economic crisis and the rising prison population?

Turning any taxpayer funded venture into a for-profit industry is a bad idea. You still have taxpayers paying for it, but now instead of just funding prisons, you're funding prison's + CEO profit margins - which is silly. It's basically giving free money to whomever contributes most to a governor's campaign and wants into the "put people in jail" business.

Worse, it creates incentive to put more people in jail, while we already have too many there to start with.

Plus private prisons are notorious for letting people escape and abusing inmates. We have examples of both private and public prisons, private ones are shitty and cost more by comparison.

Arizona Prison breaks.

That should be enough.

Prisons aren't out for profit, thus, they should not be run in a for profit manner, such as a private establishment would unless heavily regulated.

State-run facilities are well known for being overregulated and bureaucratic. Quality-wise they tend to stagnate due to lack of competition. However, the one flaw we do not want in our prisons is a tiered level (pay for better service), or financial motivation to either use workers as indentured servants, or to overcrowd facilities.
