Should you seek advice on the internet?

Yes

I see no reason why not, if it's a reasonable place. Often times you can't trust people on the internet because they have no stake in your affairs, so whatever they tell you can't come back to hurt them as evidenced by this site, yahoo answers, and pretty much any blog site.

Yet if it's a place legitimately designed for it, the people there, liek the people here, are not doing it because they want to mess around, they are doing it because they have general interest in the action in question, in that case giving advice.

It could also be seen as easier to seek advice on the internet. You don't have to go anywhere, 'say' anything, or 'listen' to anyone. You type in a URL, type up your question, then read the responses, and if they are no good, it's as easy as not responding to ignore them.

Some people may find it better also because it's a way you can confidently ask something that may embarrass you, without fear of judgement.

Yes, you can seek advice on the internet because internet actually has a lot of useful information. There are some false information, but not all of them. You can still trust the internet, but just keep in mind that there are some incorrect information on there.

Side: Yes

I think that doing so is good. Of course, the Internet is a big place and it depends exactly where you're looking for it, but sometimes it's helpful to be able to get things off your chest and talk to someone who knows absolutely nothing about the people involved. Then again, this also means you have to be careful about what you post, but overall I think it's worth it, especially if you think it'll be easier to be fully honest that way.

Side: Yes

But with caution. There are some people who get their kicks out of supplying a remedy or an opinion that can be detrimental.

I think in-person advice is the best way because any mad person can post what they want online and you wouldn't have a clue.

You would have a clue if you are critical about what you are reading. For starters you can dismiss contentions that are based on invalid arguments. Also, whenever you think some premise isn't plain common sense you can investigate the claim elsewhere on the internet. I usually don't trust anything that I can't confirm from various other, independent sources.
