Students should have limited use of calculators

I hate how my math teachers won't let us use calculators to perform basic calculations. They say it's a handicap. I say I don't care, I don't know how to count. ;P

Is it important to ensure that we, as students, don't rely on calculators, even though we're almost always going to have one on hand? What's wrong with being dependent? This isn't the stone ages. Gosh.

Yes, I'm bitter because I don't know my times tables. Haha.

One of America's education issues is the lack of foundation in the basics. As great as it is to have a calculator on hand, they're meant to be an assist not a crutch that we rely far too much on. My parents are very traditional and I didn't have regular access to a calculator until I was in high school. At that time, I resented them for it, but I'm grateful whenever I see a tenth grader struggle with long term multiplication or a middle school kid fail to reason on a math test or- and this is just sad- a middle aged dude struggle to pay the tip in a restaurant. I avoid using a calculator whenever basics can be performed in your mind, and I think it motivates students in class and gives them a sense of accomplishment if they do so as well.
