THW: ban homework

These days, students are suffering from a lot of homework. Homework may be troublesome and bad in many ways, but it also gives students a chance to review what they learned that day.

so should This House ban homework, or should it not?

Homework does not even improve your academic levels. It is your voluntary revision/studying that does. Most of the homework I get set is absolutely useless and just take up valuable time for independent learning.

Side: proposition: it must be banned

I would not ban homework altogether. For some, even many students, learning lessons requires repeated iterations; for these, lessons without further practice and reinforcement in the way of homework tend to enter and leave the short term memory without 'sticking' so to speak.

If I had to devise a system, it would be to end each class session with a short quiz on the covered material, which are graded before the class session ends- a computerized quiz would be ideal for this, but it could be accomplished with pen and paper with some doing. Students who aced the quiz would be excused from the evenings homework assignment altogether. Students who passed but did not ace the quiz would have the option to do the homework, and students who failed the quiz would be required to do the homework; in both of these cases, the homework would be graded pass/fail, with passing assignments raising the recorded score for the quiz by points equivalent to one letter grade. Failing homework assignments would not be a negative factor on the grades, but refusing to do a homework assignment when required would incur a further penalty.

I believe that this model would allow those who need the homework to reinforce their learning to do so, without overly burdening those who do not need such reinforcement.

Example scenario: At the end of algebra class, a 10-point quiz is done and graded immediately.

Bob scores 10/10 on the quiz, An 'A.'

Bob is excused from homework.

Recorded score for Bob's quiz: 10/10, an 'A.'

Sue scores 8/10 on the quiz, A 'B.'

Sue decides against doing the optional homework.

Recorded score for Sue's quiz: 8/10, a 'B,' but could have been upped to a 9/10 A if she did the homework.

Joe scores 7/10 on the quiz, A 'C.'

Joe does the optional homework for extra credit, earning an extra point on his quiz.

Recorded score for Joe's quiz: 8/10, a 'B.'

Anne scores 5/10 on the quiz, failing it with an 'F.'

Anne is required to do the homework and does so, passing and earning an extra point on her quiz.

Recorded score for Anne's quiz: 6/10, a 'D.'

Chris scores 5/10 on the quiz, failing it with an 'F.'

Chris is required to do the homework and does so, but gets a failing grade on it, so no extra credit.

Recorded score for Chris' quiz: 5/10, an 'F.'

Kate scores 5/10 on the quiz, failing it with an 'F.'

Kate is required to do the homework but decides not to, resulting in a penalty to her grade.

Recorded score for Kate's quiz: 4/10, still an 'F' for the specific assignment, but a lower score towards her total grade for the course.

Max scores 4/10 on the quiz, failing it with an 'F.'

Max is required to do the homework and does so with a passing grade, giving him a point of extra credit.

Recorded score for Max' quiz: 5/10, still an 'F' for the specific assignment, but a higher score towards his total grade for the course.

As much of a nuisance homework is, it is very useful and beneficial. Those that complain about homework are those that don't look behind the task and into their future.

It should not be banned for many reasons. Even though homework might be hard on some it help the students that are in this class or school. Homework gives the learner practice on what they have learned throughout that day and it might also tell the teacher if that one student may need help on this subject and could give help to him or her

Side: opposition: no, it should not.

Despite toddlers not wanting to learn the alphabet and other very convincing arguments, children have no other job than to learn new information and it is not out of line for school to request that they bring work home to help the material to sink in.

Side: opposition: no, it should not.

If homework gets banned, we just slack off and do nothing except for watching TV. And if we don't get homework in the lower grades, we will get really bad grades in the higher grades

Side: opposition: no, it should not.

No, homework helps children better understand what they learned that day. And I understand some children are student athletes but that's the thing about being a student athlete, you still have to finish your work.
