If you mean genuine asylum seekers, i.e. people who are escaping persecution or warfare in their home countries, sure. Australia - and any other country that considers itself civilised - should welcome in as many as their society can reasonably support.

Human rights apply universally, not just to citizens of your country. When someone is deprived of their most basic rights and there is an easy way for you to offer them these rights yourself, you should be obliged to do so.

Ordinary illegal immigrants are a different story. I support loosening immigration restrictions and being lenient on productive illegal immigrants, but I don't think the country has nearly as much moral obligation to help them.

Why not? There's nothing to justify the pain they get put through to get here only get punished. We have lots of room, in fact, Italy is hardly the size of Victoria (Which is a really small state) and yet, Italy has three times the population of Australia! Get that, three times the population and yet Italy isn't even larger than Victoria! Kicking them out is just plain racist, I'm serious!

This debate topic is too broad. The fact is, I do not support illegal immigration whilst there are many genuine refugees waiting to enter Australia through the proper means. On the other hand I accept in some cases people in dire situations need to escape and need to find a safe haven. That is why the Howard Governments policy of temporary protection visa's worked. This allowed individuals who were found to be genuine refugees tempory visas until such time it was deemed safe to go back.

The debate over detention centres, now we cant just accept anyone who turns up to our back door, we do need to house these people so that security checks and health checks can be done.
