My first thought was oh my God no but I have heard since that Disney and George Lucas have been partners for a long time so all they've done is bought him out of his share and they've done great things with the Marvel franchise so it might not be a huge disaster.
That's a good sign. Perhaps they will respect lore from the novels then when they create Episode 7. It will be sad if they don't, but Disney is not Electronic Arts; it would be somewhat presumptuous of me to automatically assume they will butcher lore that's already established.
I heard that is suppose to center around Luke Skywalker and crew, but will not be based on any pre-existing material because they are looking to create an origanal story, which i think is not a terrible idea so long as George Lucas is involved with the writing.
Honestly, I think that IS a terrible idea, personally. Simply due in put that there is already an established canon that takes place after the Original Trilogy. If that canon is violated, hundreds of books written over decades that continued and still continue the Star Wars story will suddenly all become non-canonical fan-fiction.
Too early too tell if I like this or not. In my opinion Disney proved with "Tron" that they could pull off a good live action sci-fi film. So that gives me hope. Making a good series is of course tougher than just one film, though.
I'm a fan too but I think there is a risk.... Lucas was so involved in every aspect of all the movies, without him the whole thing might feel different.... although he did make some serious mistakes in episodes 1 through 3... (especially, ep1)
I am a big star wars fan. I know a lot about the galaxy, but what I don't understand is what is so bad about the prequels? My sister and I loved the bond between obi wan and anakin.
I certainly hope it's good as well. I will not be as happy if it doesn't follow the lore from the book titles that take place after Return of the Jedi, but... I have to have some faith. Not every large company butchers modern art.
The books have provided a clear timeline of Star Wars that extends to up to, I believe, over a century after the Battle for Yavin.
Meaning even the future of Star Wars that takes place after the movies is set in stone by lore which was written in novels.
Therefore, there is lore to be broken, even if they start in the future, and if the lore gets broken, the dedicated fanbase that reads up all the lore will be outraged, thus the risk.
But this isn't to say Disney will do wrong automatically.
Well they were in close partnership already, so as long as they dont mess with how they would operate on their own, im good. I hope they are just buying them to bring in revenue and are not going to try to change or control them. When disney bought marvel i was like HECK NO, but they didnt mess it up so i hope they will do the same this time.
Not really a huge shock considering everyone should have eventually realized that Lucas was going to sell his empire due to his age and the amount of work it takes to operate it.
It is actually a good thing since the star wars series and the producers aren't doing anything at the moment to produce new series etc. If disney takes over the production of star wars then maybe new star wars related stuff will be released to satisfy fans and supporters although parts of the original story may be twisted a bit or altered.
Well hold on now, just because Disney owns it doesn't means it's gonna be all Disney ish. Doesn't Disney own Marvel?
So if they screw it up it wont necessarily be Disney's fault. I know the thought is kind of un comfortable. Something like star wars being owned my Disney..
With that said people see what they want to see. I'm sure some people have already made up their minds about how it's gonna be crap even though they don't know anything about what the movies are going to be like.
Let's talk about the potential this presents. There's a lot of cool stuff that could still be done with the starwars world. I remember watching some sort of starwars video game trailer a few months back with a sith army attacking the jedi temple and it was one of the coolest things I have ever seen. And I was thinking it would be cool if a starwars movie was more like that.
When we compare 4-6 with 1-3 many of us hate 1-3 because it doesn't have what the original movies had but you have to admit there are some things about 1-3 that are amazing. Like the light saber battles.
And so if you're one of those people who thinks 1-3 already ruined starwars then what do you have to lose?
Starwars has never really been known for it's acting.. maybe this could be a chance for there to more substance in a starwars movie. There's lots of great things that could come from this.
I'm also jaded in how I feel about it. It has the potential to be the second wind of the entire series as a movie franchise, but also has the potential to be a catastrophic failure. After all, we already have dozens, if not hundreds, of books detailing the events after the Original Trilogy and the events prior to the Prequel Trilogy.
If the new movies were to not be in synch with these books, the dedicated fanbase would likely be outraged.
Well, I guess 4 billion could make just about anyone change their mind... That article made it sound like Episode 7 is already in the works? I had no idea?
It is to be released in 2015, but yes, it is supposedly in the works.
Luckily, the rumors I've heard about it's plot details would suggest that it is going to be canonical to the books, which would be good... but, it's not even necessarily true that it will be.
Just because he sold it does not mean he will have no part in continuing. Just means he needed money now. Also, think about how much Disney makes. The next one will look AMAZING in special effects, which is necessary in a movie like Star Wars.
No he sold Star Wars Disney has control not gorge Lucus.Have you seen most of the crap Disney makes there're going to put crappy effects like sparkles and all that stuff.
Some of them are, the can't all be winners, but lately the movies they've been coming out with have been great.
And it's not like this is the first thing Disney has bought out, you wouldn't even believe some of the things they own actually, but they do a pretty good job of keeping these things the same.
Whilst I agree with what both you and Delta have said and that most Disney films are crap they have done well with the Marvel franchise and were already in partnership with George Lucas on some of the Star Wars films (i'm not sure how far back this goes and which films) so i'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and wait and see, they must know that there are loads if fanboys out there who will give them hell if they cock this one up.
I've developed an apathy for whatever happens to Star Wars. I like the much that I like, and the rest doesn"t really matter. It's not like making a 7th Star Wars could possibly affect the Star Wars I do like.
Because a new Star Wars movie in the right direction would be awesome. I really mean the Old Republic. A movie during that era would be epic if they did it right.
I mean think about it its crazy right. The disney franchise has ruined things as of late. On December 31, 2009, Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment, Inc. for $4.24 billion. Disney has stated that their acquisition of the company will not affect Marvel's products, neither will the nature of any Marvel characters be transformed. They have nothing to do with Marvel see. I will give them props for reviving the Muppets though. I LOVE THE MUPPETS. so props theree disney.
disney taking star wars is like taking every good movie and turning it to shit, like example all those crappy star wars show. why would you want to remake it if its already good enough and plus disney should use better ideas
The original trilogy are some of my favorite movies, ever (Empire Strikes Back is the best, of course). They were the result of many different people and their contributions, from the writers, to Lucas himself, to his wife, etc.
The prequel trilogy, on the other hand, is what happened when we saw Lucas have artistic reign. Racist caricatures, plot holes comparable to the Death Star Mk1's exhaust port, retconning that threatened to ruin the entire story, etc.
I was very, VERY concerned about the newest movie, particularly considering the terrible shows that have been created. That said, The Force Awakens is definitely better than Episodes 1-3, and while it isn't as good as 4-6, it definitely deserves to be viewed more positively than Lucas' brainchild sequels.
Now what will happen with the clusterf--k of movies that are coming very soon here remains to same.
