Point of Order: Not one nation has survived as a multiculture.
Switzerland has four national languages and seems to be doing fine. They also seem to have no cultural problems, despite distinct cultural disparities between regions tied to neighboring nations such as Italy or France.
India, Canada, the Philippines, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, and the Netherlands are just a few others. Wikipedia has a much larger list, but the point is that you're simply wrong. Many nations have done perfectly fine with multiple official languages. Moreover, even in nations that have only a single official language, it is not devastating for there to be a sizable portion of the population that speaks an alternative.
Seriously, you have to let this point go jake, the facts are stacked so heavily against even the idea of a multicultural State somehow not being able to survive that it boggles the mind.
Not to mention it's impossible anyway. Every nation, no matter how crappy, has always and will always have multiple cultures, you can embrace it, or become a raving looney like that old man.
Really think about it, name one place that only has one culture... there is none. Ruwanda, who the hell would even want to live there, and they have multiple cultures. Of course they take the road of blaming the minority cultures for their problems and you know, do some "ethnic cleansing" every now and then, yet still there are multiple cultures.
Not to say that this guy is suggesting ethnic cleansing (laughs nervously because any old guy who dresses like it's halloween and would put out a video like this privately might not be against it.)
"Really think about it, name one place that only has one culture... there is none."
I think North Korea may fit the bill for the demanded criteria. The Juche ideology demands a singular cultural expression and North Korea is, as you know, pretty well hermetically sealed against outside cultural influences.
The Workers' Party of Korea (the only party) exclusively controls the production of literature and art and it doesn't appear as though there is any underground literary or cultural movements such as the production of samizdat in the former Soviet Union or the movements that currently exist in the People's Republic of China.
To be fair to your point (because mine is rather petty, don't you find?), North Korea may be the only example.
But America has never had one culture. The American culture is derived from the the different cultures that settle here with a definite yet weakening bias towards our english roots.
Wow...okay last time I compared you to the KKK and you got upset, so I'm guessing that comparing what this guy is saying to Nazism is probably not going to go over very well.
To argue that diversity is a weakness of America is to argue that the idea of America itself is a bad one. This is what I don't understand about these "America First" groups; it's like they have never read a history book. Diversity is what has made this country great. The fact that we have different cultures and different perspectives makes us stronger.
Amazing creativity has come from the different cultures that exist in our nation. If you don't believe me look up the Harlem Renaissance, or the Beat poets, or Jazz.
He argues about language, but how often are you actually bothered by the fact that people speak other language? In fact, do you know one of the reasons why our codes were unbreakable in WWII? Navajo code talkers! That's right. The fact that people knew different languages actually helped us win a war.
I guess what sums it up best is probably the statue of liberty:
"Wow...okay last time I compared you to the KKK and you got upset"
The fact that I got upset is irrelevant. Do you admit that you where wrong?
Do you seriously think I am like the KKK?
Of course I'm going to get upset when you incorrectly judge me.
(:
"To argue that diversity is a weakness of America is to argue that the idea of America itself is a bad one."
It's not about immigrants it's about culture. He's not saying different types of immigrants is a problem. He's saying that America is better off with one culture and one language.
But put that through the liberal mind filter and you get a racist Nazi.
"He argues about language, but how often are you actually bothered by the fact that people speak other language?"
All the time!, some people that live here don't speak any English. That's a little inconvenient.
Some have English as their #2 language including some of my bosses. They speak whatever language at home then come to work and I can barely understand a freaking word. Thats not good, did you know that?
" In fact, do you know one of the reasons why our codes were unbreakable in WWII?"
Yeah, I did know. ..Thanks anyways. We don't need that anymore.
Statue of liberty? Yeah, once again this isn't about immigrants it's about culture. So that really is irrelevant.
I'm not racist and I don't want to have innocent people turtured and murdered. Please let go of the kkk/nazi argument it is so old. So please, quit, let go.
Copy and paste, guess you didn't see this:
Hey, instead of desputing this, just post on the other side!
I just put it here so that you could more easily see the video. Don't dispute me I haven't adden an argument! ..Killing me.
Some have English as their #2 language including some of my bosses. They speak whatever language at home then come to work and I can barely understand a freaking word.
This is probably because you tune out any non-American accent. I have a problem with people coming here and not learning our language, but I have nothing but respect for those that make an effort to make English a second (or third or fourth) language. Sometimes I'll have to ask a non-native speaker for clarification, or to slow down, but if we both make a little effort, conversation is not complicated or impossible.
" In fact, do you know one of the reasons why our codes were unbreakable in WWII?"
Yeah, I did know. ..Thanks anyways. We don't need that anymore.
What makes you think that we won't need it in the future?
Statue of liberty? Yeah, once again this isn't about immigrants it's about culture. So that really is irrelevant.
It's entirely relevant. Tell me what characterizes American culture (the one that we ought to keep unadulterated by any others) that is purely original?
The whole Nazi thing was mostly a joke, so don't get your panties in a twist.
Anyway, what the guy is saying is that our culture is the best, and everyone that comes to our country should be like us.
First, assuming your own cultural superiority is arrogant, and second there is no one American culture, and hopefully there never will be. Is he suggesting that we all dress up in wigs and 17th century clothing like our forefathers? Or better yet, does he realize that the first people to come over here didn't bother to learn the native language. I suppose if we really wanted an American culture we could all buy tee-pees and wigwams...maybe do a rain dance around a fire. But clearly Mr. Thomas Pain didn't think about that.
You live in Texas correct? I'm guessing you know a little bit about Texas history as well then. You therefore know that Texas was originally a part of Mexico. If you're going to annex part of a country then you may have to put up with people speaking that other languages culture.
In addition, this guy doesn't seem to realize that the majority of our founding fathers were not religious, and some didn't even consider themselves Christian. For some reason though, this guy seems to have a problem with atheists. If you're gonna dress like your from the 18th century, at least know some history. Even Thomas Paine was against religion:
"All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit."
Historical inaccuracies, controdictions, and hypocrisy aside, his overall idea of "one nation, one culture" is still a pretty crappy one.
I understand why people who don't speak English would want to learn English if they came to our country, but what I don't understand is why people like the guy in the video get so damn angry at them when they don't, and I certainly don't think we should force them to learn the language. I thought conservatives were about no government intervention?
How about we consider the fact that some of the greatest cultural achievements in recent American history have been from those who weren't part of the mainstream culture, but instead part of a counter-culture.
The one thing I did agree with was that we shouldn't encourage tolerance. I guarantee, however, that my reasons are different than his. When I stub my toe I tolerate pain. Differences in our society shouldn't be merely tolerated but accepted, and even embraced. I don't understand why anyone would want to homogenize our society. If you want an example of how diversity is good, look at our food: Philly cheesesteaks, New York style pizza, Memphis bar-b-q, Louisiana jambalaya and so on.
Difference is good. We need different cultures to challenge our assumptions. I know that this isn't something you're used to doing, but maybe you should start.
You should watch "the color of fear" this reminds me of the lady who "loves Indians, I collect their artifacts."
At any rate, there's a very good reason we don't want a national language. And the majority has stated very clearly who should be in power right now, and the majority won, so calm down with this revolution bullshit.
Well, that guy is not the silent majority, he's the loud minority. And all of our leaders were voted in with a majority, this isn't Iran. And from my perspective it seems this guy is the one who is "uneducated and indoctrinated." Seriously, he sounds like a complete idiot.
And you should watch the "Color of Fear" whether you want to or not. It's a great documentary, and I think only like 40 minutes. It's probably not whatever you think it is anyway. And some Universities require it, so you might be giving yourself a head start.
"Anyways where was this majority talk the past "8 years"!?!? "
It probably occurred mostly around the 2000 election when the candidate who won the majority of votes wasn't made president.
"What if the majority of the majority is uneducated and indocrinated? "
Right because if a Republican wins then the majority is informed and free thinking, but if a Democrat wins then obvious that election everyone became indoctrinated and forgot everything they knew.
While I disagree with some of the statements made by that guy, I believe that America needs to address its problems now. There's a long list of issues, and it seems that Congress takes forever to fix something. Most of the time, it gets it wrong anyways.
I got 3 minutes into that before I tuned out. I'm actually pretty proud.
If a man has enough time to dress up, and make a you tube video about how angry he is that we accommodate the values that the country was founded on, then he should have enough time to do something constructive, instead. Like, iunno.
Volunteer to teach an ESL class to immigrants.
Being supportive and welcoming is always better than being a whiny bitch. Let them pay taxes, let them educate their children, let them thrive.
Maybe then we'll have enough workers to support social security and medicaid.
If you are going to impersonate an historical figure at least do some research before. Paine was born of the enlightenment and an ardent non-believer, all one has to do is read his works and letters to know this. The caricature this man has created is more akin to the propaganda Paine made for the Revolutionary war which motivated the Christian masses, but then again if that's what he's going for then I suppose he did an ok job.
Don't get me wrong, I am for a lot of what he is saying, but I hold a great deal of admiration for Thomas Paine and simply don't like the caricature.
Paine was a deist, but he did use Christian propaganda (so did Hitler).
There's no point in having an official language in a FREE country. I think we have to start remembering that America is different from all the other countries. We shouldn't have a structure like everyone else. We're supposed to be rebellious and have limited government. It's what America was born to be. Not just another country with a "pride" in it's culture or religion. We should be proud to JUST be America. We should be proud to be free.
