The ban on Russian athletes in international sporting events needs to be lifted

In December 2019, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) handed Russia a 4 year ban from all major sporting events. The reason for the ban was because the Russian Anti-Doping agency was found to have manipulated laboratory data handed over to investigators. The data was required as a condition of Russia being reinstated from a previous ban for state sponsored doping. The ban means that Russian teams, flag and anthems are not allowed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (postponed to 2021) and the 2022 Football World Cup in Qatar. However, athletes deemed to be clean can compete as ‘neutrals’. Competing as neutrals would mean athletes would be under a ‘neutral’ flag and not a Russian one. For example, Russian athletes competed as “Olympic Athlete from Russia” in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Is a blanket ban for one country fair if other countries clearly have their own doping issues but just haven’t been singled out like the Russians? Why single out Russia? Allegations have been made about other countries but nothing has been done. WADA is just responding to the media rather than facing the issue head-on mostly.

I presume they only had evidence against the Russians. I don't doubt for a moment that cheating is widespread, but that doesn't mean states that get caught should get a pass. I remember when Lance Armstrong was busted and he gave an interview saying everybody was doing it, but two wrongs don't make a right.

I have some sympathy for Russia but ultimately they should have focused their efforts not on cheating, but on identifying and reporting cheaters.

I have linked a website below which talks about a WADA report which factually reports the number of violations per country, with Russia 5th on the list. This report was created with the information that WADA had used when banning Russia.

It is clear that Russia is being targeted by WADA which is based in Canada as there has been no action taken against those Countries who have done worse. Italy has more than double the doping violations and the US has at least 20 more, but they are still allowed to compete under their flags. It is inherently clear that this is just a ploy to create further distrust in Russia and for WADA to set an example against cheaters while only targeting a more controversial country.

Unfair towards Russian athletes who have not done anything wrong and have never cheated and/or taken drugs. Even though they can compete under a neutral flag it is unfair that they cannot represent their home country, why should they be punished for the actions of others?

Loss of income for Russia. It will be harder for them to advertise their athletes as they are not competing under the Russian flag. Russian people also have less incentive to watch.Russian athletes themselves probably will have trouble getting sponsors. Competing in the Olympics doesn't make much money so sponsorships help them make money which they now might not be able to get.

What does banning Russian uniforms, the country’s flag, the hosting international championships, government officials and the playing of its anthem at international competitions do to stop them from cheating? This is not an effective or necessary way to stop cheating in Russia. It just seems like an attack on Russia. Will the Russians retaliate in some way, as they often threaten to do when in conflict with the West? Is it safer to not ban them politically and take another form of action?

Instead, the Russian doping agency needs to be set up differently, be entirely transparent and WADA needs to employ people there from WADA to keep an eye and help support the Russians and their doping agency.

I think you are misinterpreting what the offence is here. Presumably Russia was banned for a statewide cheating program of some kind, which means the cheating should be associated with the state of Russia and not individual athletes.

Banning them will help stop the culture of banning and it is setting a precedent for any government motivated to cheat in order to win medals.

Anything less than a ban could strike a blow to the trust that athletes and consumers have in the Olympics

Russia needs to be punished, hundreds of athletes cheated with the help of Russa who helped fake drug tests. An example needs to be set.
