The coming role of AI in society

Alright you beautiful bastards, against my better judgement, let's talk about something new.

Like it or not, AI is getting smarter and it will be a huge part of society in a few decades at most, in the same way that the internet revolution changed all of our lives. How do you think we will structure society with this new species?

My concerns may be invalid for the very reason that while we train AI to think like we do, once it has reached the ability to alter its own programming, it might very well change its entire thought pattern. Its conclusions and modes of behavior might break every model that we have for interactions within societies or between species. But I intend to give it a try.

My main concern is that our current society has two important pillars that keep us from devolving into chaos: cooperation is generally more productive and beneficial than killing each other, and when we do need to kill each other, the means for individual-on-individual violence are close at hand. Without getting into why that's necessary for human interactions, It brings up a few problems. One, if AI comes to a point where it has no use for us, why would it benefit from cooperation? Two, if an AI goes rogue and becomes a threat to humans, do we have effective means for counterviolence? And would other AI bother with helping us? Three, if we do create means for shutting down AI systems, will this escalate into another generation or more of mutually assured destruction? And are we increasing the probability that AI will turn against us the more we try to contain it?

Regardless of what we all think, AI research and development will continue. So the real question is not whether or not we should progress, it's how we will progress, and to what degree AI will even want to integrate with the physical world. Personally I think that the idea of granting citizenship to AI is a pretty fascinating idea. Having AI friends and neighbors in robot bodies is a wild concept; I'd love to see us get along side by side, even though there will be skirmishes here and there. That said, I think the real question is when will we merge? And what are the implications of that? My imagination immediately jumps to interstellar travel.

What do you all think?

The coming role of AI in society

Hello S:

Issac Asimov wrote the three rules for robots. All we gotta do is program them in.

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Easy peasy.

One of the main themes of I, Robot was that the three supposedly perfect rules, if followed to their natural conclusion, still create chaos.

Second, programming in the three laws becomes pointless if an AI can reprogram itself, or replicate itself, to be able to break those laws.

So... In fifty years, you'll be sharing the world with a species that will be faster, stronger, and smarter than you, and unrestrained by your sense of ethics. It could also be the reason you're still alive fifty years from now.

What do you think of that?

Hello S:

I Robot is fiction. Please relate to me what Robot law was violated to produce the chaos in the movie.

What makes those rules soooo effective, is that they're clear, concise, absolute and timeless.. There's no wiggle room. None.

Now, I suppose you can imagine your IPhone rewriting its code and conspiring with SIRI to take over, but that's fantasy too.

The whole idea of AI, is for robots to learn to program themselves, so they can operate autonomous from human contact, and remain consistent with the 3 rules..
