The first space colony.
Let's say we're a few decades into the future and a planet has been found which we can inhabit and the first load of people are about to be sent off to colonise it.
Who would you suggest get's sent off. Scientist? Engineers? Homosexuals?

Well, firstly I can tell you what we are currently doing. I remember reading not so long back that some sort of terraformer project on Mars would occur by 2050. NASA said that they would take anyone who volunteered who was both fit and qualified enough. So I'd probably imagine that would happen. It'd just be like a job interview, I suppose. 1

Well, I'm not saying they'd send an army of Trekkies up. To expand on the job interview analogy; imagine there's an offer to be a chef. Anyone can apply, but only those that meet the requirements will get the job. So just loving food won't get you it. Same with NASA, I think. Anyone can apply, but just loving space won't get you it. 1

There's plenty of water, it's just frozen at the poles. They'd either have to have their colony at the poles, where there isn't enough direct sunlight for solar power, or they'd have to find some way to transport the water toward the equator. Or maybe there's underground water further towards they equator that they could tap into. 1

Homosexuals wouldn't particularly mind. There'd be plenty for us to do on the way there and plenty for us to do once we got there, but we're really not ideal for that job. There's things that we do really well, but re-populating the species is not one of them. Once you get the place set up, give us a call if you need help decorating. |
