CreateDebate is a social debate community built around ideas, discussion and democracy.
If this is your first time checking out a debate, here are some quick tips to help get you started:
Arguments with the highest score are displayed first.
Argument replies (both in favor and in opposition) are displayed below the original argument.
To follow along, you may find it helpful to show and hide the replies displayed below each argument.
To vote for an argument, use these icons:
You have the power to cast exactly one vote (either up or down) for each argument.
Once you vote, the icon will become grayed out and the argument's score will change.
Yes, you can change your vote.
Debate scores, side scores and tag scores are automatically calculated by an algorithm that primarily takes argument scores into account.
All scores are updated in real-time.
To learn more about the CreateDebate scoring system, check out the FAQ.
When you are ready to voice your opinion, use the Add Argument button to create an argument.
If you would like to address an existing argument, use the Support and Dispute link within that argument to create a new reply.
Crime is not caused by a lack of morality, even though society may deem the action(s) immoral themselves. Criminal behavior derives from social failure (e.g. inadequate social support, discrimination, unequal opportunity, etc.). The reason people find it easier or more tempting to break prevailing moral codes is not because their morality has failed, but because they perceive society to have failed them and feel a diminished attachment to society.
Interesting, considering I am not a liberal. Incidentally, also an erroneous conclusion I believe. My statement was not an apologetic, but an observation of the relationship of society to criminal psychology. If accurate observations are liberal speak, then I plead guilty to the charges. Intriguingly, I have heard it said that avoiding directly addressing an argument is a right wing tactic ( a rather unfair characterization I think; anyone can play that game).
I knew lots of well of kids that committed crime for the thrill. Also, there's plenty of white collar crime. I just don't think it's as simple as you describe ;)
Hm, yes, valid points. I guess my view has been rather stilted of late as I have been studying serial offender pathology. Definitely a rather more narrow focus. I think there is likely still a social role at work though, particularly with more severe forms of criminal behavior (white collar or otherwise) and especially where some degree of pathology is evident. But I fear this is taking me quite off the original topic...
Have you ever read the bible? I ask because, if you do read the bible, and follow the instructions for slavery, ritual child sacrifice, genocide, rape, etc... you would probably end up in prison.
So..., we shouldn't let criminals read the bible in prison? How about the Wiccan bible? Is that one any better? I ask because whatever they were reading before prison was not working ;)
OK..., now..., see..., this site is for getting people riled up. In order for me to get people riled up, I need to fabricate controversy. You pointing out that there's no controversy doesn't advance my agenda nor the site's agenda ;)
One of our country's tenants is Freedom of Religion...meaning...if you would like your kid to learn about the Bible in school, you are FREE to send them to a private school which offers Theology classes.
If kids are to be brainwashed it should be the parent's choice.
This is why we separate church and state.
I'd also add that children can read Bible's in public school, just as inmates may read Bible's...both of which are on their own time.

First of all... this is not irony. Prison is not the exact opposite as school.
The government doesn't CARE if you read the bible while you are in school. You can even create a club to read the bible with your friends. You can even meet on school grounds!
But, what you can't do is lead a classroom in prayer, and force your stupid religion on others.
NOBODY NEEDS THE STUPID WORTHLESS bible FOR ANYTHING SO LEAVE ALL THOSE BIG IDIOTS IN PRISON WHO HAVE NOTHING TO DO AND ARE NOT SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW IT IS A WASTE READ OR LOOK AT THEM INSTEAD OF THROWING THEM AWAY , HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA .
Uh oh, someone someone just read the book of Genesis, took it literally and didn't understand any of the lessons it teaches through metaphors and stories.
PS: I'm agnostic, and know some Christians who are smarter than you.
1. You CAN read the bible, or Qur'an or Torah. As a matter of fact I read the bible at school, during my free time.
2. Christians make up most of the religious demographic in prisons, followed by Muslims. Would you still be OK with this propaganda if it the prisoner was reading the Qur'an, that your kids are allowed to read in school?
3. Atheists or non-religious prisoners make up for less than 10%
