The meaning of Christmas?

Hey there, after having just bought my last gifts for my family and friends, I have come to realise the true cost of this ‘spirit of Christmas’. I’m now broke celebrating a god that no one seems to believe in. I’ve started to think that it just gives false hope to those afraid of the nothingness after death and a reason for a knees-up at the darkest time of the year. Doesn’t religion give false hope for some and a set of moral guidelines for those without a moral compass? If so surely knowing there isn’t an afterlife would result in others doing more with the only life they have.

In our household Christmas is about the celebration of the birth of our lord and savior Jesus Christ. That day is solely dedicated to him.

Same here. :)

That does not really answer the substance of OPs questions... There is your personal meaning, which you answered, but I think there are more general questions at hand regarding the culture of Christmas and religion generally. I may be incorrect of course; OP?

Honestly, I didn't read the description, so I acted with haste. That's my fault if my post isn't spot on. This is just the meaning of Christmas in my household and in my general community.

You start with Christmas and quickly turn to complaints about all of Christendom. If you are pissed that you spent all your money, look only to yourself. If you can't appreciate the great comfort and strength that religion brings to millions, then look at your own lack of empathy for your fellow man.

Christmas is pretty complicated because there's a lot of cultures mixed up in it. Most of our traditions, such as christmas trees, are pagan in origin. (I'm pretty sure jeremiah 2-4 criticises people who put up christmas trees as heathens)

Yule log, pagan. Random bits of evergreens, pagan. The very idea of celebrating a birthday, pagan.

Christmas is a mix of different pagan traditions, christianity, secular culture and consumerism. It's wrong to say it's a holiday that belongs to one religion only.

Religion has nothing to do with a relationship with Jesus Christ .God hates religion .Religion was and is created by men.God is not about denominations.Sadly there are few churches that preach the true gospel message . You can learn the Bible truth on SBN [ Son Life Network ] free channel -344 on direct t v ] live or archive messages on their web site . Christmas is not the actual birthday of Jesus but the day that was chosen to celebrate His birth many years ago.His actually birthday is unknown .if God wanted it known we would know it.Christmas is the one day a year that Christ is in the forefront of everything from manger scenes , plays and songs everywhere.People who never attend church will often attend a Christmas Eve service .And although most people will forget about the Lord the day after Christmas there are those who's eyes will be open to His truth maybe during a play or at that Christmas Eve service or maybe when they are listening to carol and they will ask Jesus Christ into their heart and they will become '' born again '' by His Spirit .They will become a new creation ,a child of God .and this is why Jesus Christ was born ,died and rose again .That all who believe will receive eternal life .What an amazing gift .

Religion- the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.

Christianity- the religion based on the person and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, or its beliefs and practices.

So you are saying that Jesus hates Christianity?

Most people forget that Christmas is all about BING CROSBY singing, ''I'm Dreaming of a white Christmas.

I heard that playing the other day while walking through the shopping centre. Made me feel especially nostalgic.

Your primary complaint is really more with consumerism and its appropriation of religious holiday for profit, not so much the holiday itself. Save your money next year; celebrate the people in your life instead by spending time with them, or hand-making gifts, or something like that.

As far as no one believing in god... I fervently wish, but the overwhelming majority still does.

I’ve started to think that it just gives false hope to those afraid of the nothingness after death and a reason for a knees-up at the darkest time of the year. Religion is an evolved coping mechanism that strives to reconcile our developed awareness of our mortality with our instinctual drive to keep living. It is an individual and collective delusion that lets people cope with that reality, as well as to explain away the other unpleasant realities of life (e.g. loss of loved ones, betrayal, perceived cruelty, etc.).

Religion sets a moral code, but not necessarily a very good one (if there even is such a thing... I am personally an amoralist; I can elaborate if you like). It is certainly not the only source for morality, though it is rather uniquely the only one that inherently asserts itself as absolute, unchanging, and unquestionable.

Not believing in an afterlife might compel one to live this life more fully, but of course there are always other variables to consider (e.g. genetic disposition towards alcoholism, etc.).

Christmas is a capitalist holiday. The meaning of it is to buy things to show those around you that you enjoy the company of, that you enjoy their company.

In a nation where the people have no faith in God (Russia being one), there would be NO moral compass. Do you actually think man can agree on any moral values? They can't even describe morals. Liberal Democrats have proven this to be the case. In their human anti God so called moral compass, late term abortions for any reason are ok. Talk about excusing away inhumanity to others! They are political correct judgmental fanatics who will censor any religious expression in our public places because they are the arrogant ones who believe THEY have all the answers to life & will tell us all how to think. Their God is self & evolution. Don't let the fact that evolution is but a theory and no scientist even knows how life sprang up from no life.

Christmas is suppose to be all about Christ. It is the world that turned it into money. If you spend all your money on gifts then shame on you. Christmas is about love and you can love someone without buying them presents. Can you bake cookies & take it to others for an enjoyable evening? That does not cost too much does it? Christmas should be about giving to those who have nothing rather than giving to those we want to impress with our generosity.

Your description of Christians is the typical judgmental mentality from the Left. I don't believe in God because of fear of the after life or some crutch to lean on from all the trials of life. I do so because of the truth in the words from the New Testament in the Bible. They are the perfect road map to a fulfilling life and could not have been written by man because man is all about self love. Do you actually find true happiness in self love? By trying to live up to God's standards, we most often will not destroy our lives with sex, drugs, alcohol, etc.

Funny, I seem to recall conservative Christians being just as commercial as the liberal ones. You would try and make this a partisan issue though, of course. It is, after all, your one trick pony.
