This line about god cracked me up!

So I wanted to share it. I was watching an old rerun of one of my favorite all-time series, "Arrested Development." In this particular scene an atheist woman was being asked questions by a judge at a beauty pageant. She was a contestant.

I think it was some sort of Christian-sponsored pageant. So the judge asks her, "Can you tell us how much of an impact god has played in your life?"

And she replies......"Oh, I'd say about as much as Big Bird or the Keebler elves."

LOL.

I agree 100%. It is the same for me, and for everybody really, if they truly had to admit it, that god does not do a tangible thing, except act as a placebo adult version of a childhood imaginary friend. Again, like a Big Bird or an elf.

What say you, fellow agnostics and atheists?

What say you, Christians and bible thumpers?

You misspelled God's name, and Big Bird and Keebler elves would be created things, so when you call refer to God as a thing but spelling his name like god is a thing rather than God who is the Creator of all things including the ability to imaging things like Big Bird or Keebler Elves, you are creating a straw man and arguing against that straw man.

The appropriate response for that girl would have been to say "I do not believe in God so I cannot say He has done anything for me". That would be respectable. For her to compare God to the Big Bird and Keebler elves is an insult to God first, and then to everybody who knows He is God, basically calling them deluded. The girl should be disqualified from any pageant which scores character when she makes a comment like that.

God gets the last laugh, Slappy......laugh it up while you can if that's the way you want to go.

That girl should have been sent packing with no explanation and the judges then could post there reason for throwing her out on her tail later. She should not have been allowed to stand to talk on that property for one second after that comment, she should have been escorted out the door with all of her belongings.

"I do not believe in God so I cannot say He has done anything for me". That would be respectable.

To be fair though, if she had said that then they would probably have asked her why she deserves to exist outside of hell. To get through to thick headed Christians you really need to humiliate them.

1 point

Agreed. I have grown weary of being respectful to some of the more zealous Christians around here. Why should I? They don't respect my atheism or my science, so the gloves are coming off, my friend.

I think it would have been good to ask her, as she is being escorted off the property with all of her belongings, things like "What makes you think you deserve to exist outside of Hell?" But to entertain her rudeness after she made that stupid comment smacking her lips like she devoured God.......nope. Kick her out first.

You don't come into my house and humiliate me unless you are ready for a fight. That girl was acting like she was the queen in power over that place......kick her out.

You probably would not last one day on here if I owned this site....Slap Shot might, but I don't think you would.

I certainly did not misspell god's name.

I simply failed to capitalize it. I did this intentionally. Why is the world would I take the bother to capitalize it? It's no more deserving of being capped than are the words: elf; ghost; demon; superstition; imaginary friend; or spirit.

To me they are all the same, and indeed poses equal amounts of credibility.

SS

Saintnow(3684) Disputed

I guess you forgot some basics of English.....the name of a person, like your name, is a proper noun and is to be capitalized. How can you argue against God when you say you are not arguing against God but against god which would be something like cement, rubber, trees, whatever........if you are going to be an honest atheist, you have to say that God is not God are you are being dishonest. I guess you can be a dishonest atheist and argue against straw men.

The only one you want to deny is God, the Living God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth and all things therein. You really don't care about other gods, there is only one God you want to be free from because you know you are guilty and if you can't be free from God you are on your way to Hell. So go on and fool yourself into thinking you are free of God's influence and not subject to His rule.

Saintnow(3684) Disputed
1 point

So you cannot capitalize the name of Darth Vader or Paul Bunyon of Babe the Blue Ox? But you can capitalize Thor and Zeus? Why is that? Are you afraid that by using proper English in reference to God, you might think He is God and you can't handle that idea because you want Him to leave you alone?

You see, you cannot argue against God. You can only argue against things which are not God to have proof that THEY are not God. That's a no brainer, it's intellectual dishonesty and laziness.

Saintnow(3684) Disputed
1 point

When the man asked the question, he was asking what impact God had on the girls life. You are not quoting the man correctly when you say he asked what impact god had on the girls life. That would be like saying "what impact did cement have on your life"

The girl's response was totally out of order, uncalled for, and should have disqualified her for poor character. She could have said, "to me, God is like the Keebler Elves so I cannot say He has had any impact on my life". That would be acceptable as she would be saying in effect, "I do not believe in God, I recognize that you do." Atheism is an insult to God and atheists just can't help but to insult anybody who believes in God......and when it's done in my house, I'm going to give the evil doer the boot maybe with no warning and maybe after one warning. In a pageant, no such warning is required to disqualify a contestant.

My take on immorality is Eternal Life.

What is Light?

Can it be in three time periods at the same time?

Is there a place in the speed of light where time stands still?

Is God known as Light?

Does He give Eternal Life?

Did anyone writing the Bible understand the speed of light, or was that a scientific realization of modern day?

Then how or why would light and eternal life and Omnipresence meaning every where at once and Omniscience, knowing all things past present and future, why do you think light and these characteristics of the person who IS Light would somehow appear together, as characteristics found in God, who is The Light?

Again did these ancient writers understand the science of Light?

It is now seen why you don't have the set of nuts to post about the Muslim faith. You are scared because you are surrounded by those RagHeads.

By 2007 Metro Detroit, if defined as Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw counties had the United States's largest Arab American population, larger than that of Greater Los Angeles if that region was defined as Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties. As of that year Arab Americans are one of the largest immigrant groups into Southeastern Michigan. As of 2000 the majority of Metro Detroit's Arabs are Lebanese, Palestinian, Yemeni, and Iraqi.According to Jen’nan Ghazal Read of the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2000, in the Wayne-Oakland-Macomb-Washtenaw region there were 96,363 persons of Arab ancestry. As of 2000 there were 92,122 people of Arab ancestry in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, making up 79.2% of Michigan's people of Arab ancestry.

Reason you running scared there boy.

Detroit Muslims rally against the First Amendment

Led by a newspaper publisher, Muslim activists will call for putting limits on American free speech at a Dearborn rally this evening. You can’t make this stuff up.

Nearly a decade after Dearborn’s streets celebrated America for bringing down Saddam Hussein and opening a door to democracy in the Mideast, the same city will be the epicenter today of calls to squelch free speech. Protesting the film, “Innocence of Muslims,” that has sparked protests in the Mideast, rally organizer Tarek Baydoun says that so-called blasphemy laws are necessary to prevent speech that hurts the “the religious feelings of Muslims.”

By comparing God to Big Bird and the Keebler elves, she insulted every person on the planet who believes in God. Doing that on her own property is her own business, but when she is acting that way in a place supposedly rules by Christians, it would be appropriate to start her on her way out the door before she could draw another breath in her gloating denying God gives her the air to breathe.

In America, Christians in recent decades have pulled put back from cultural influence and this blasphemous disrespect is now the norm in public places. Perversion dominates our culture now, and the moral backbone of America which is the bastion of freedom in the world is crumbling...and while I would like to blame the evolutionists and atheists as all they care about is being able to resist those who would criticized their sin, their perversion, their arrogance; the blame really lies with Christians for not trusting in the Lord enough to be strong to resist spiritual wickedness in high places.

City in Michigan First to Fully Implement Sharia Law

In a surprise weekend vote, the city council of Dearborn, Michigan voted 4-3 to became the first US city to officially implement all aspects of Sharia Law. The tough new law, slated to go into effect January 1st, addresses secular law including crime, politics and economics as well as personal matters such as sexual intercourse, fasting, prayer, diet and hygiene.

The new law could see citizens stoned for adultery or having a limb amputated for theft. Lesser offenses, such as drinking alcohol or abortion, could result in flogging and/or caning. In addition, the law imposes harsh laws with regards to women and allows for child marriage.

Some in town seem to welcome the new legislation while others have denounced the move as “abhorrent”, a threat to freedom and incompatible with the Constitution. When asked by National Report about the need for such a law, local resident Jeremy Ahmed stated:

“It is because of our need that Allah the Almighty, in all his generosity, has created laws for us, so that we can utilize them to obtain justice. We hope to see other cities taking this action in the face of the governments inaction of passing such legislation”.

Make your post about the Religion of Islam boy if you got the nuts.

What is it about Democrats that they constantly rail against Christians while Muslims are murdering people.

Must be as the Bible says. The Godless don't worry about false religions, they will only fight against the one true faith.

When people kill in the name of Christians, you don't think those people are Christian. When people support abortion and say they are Christians, you don't think those people are Christians. Whenever anyone does anything that doesn't fit your view of what Christianity should be, you don't think those people are Christian. But when a group of people who know almost nothing of the Muslim faith create a terrorist organization and you think that means you need to give special attention to all Muslims, you are beyond hypocritical.

Did you ever hear of apples to apples, or equal weight of measure?

Jesus said straight is the gate and narrow is the way.

Many people that say they are Christians are not.

Jesus spent a lot of time teaching the difference, and in the end time judgment goes first to those who say they are His but are not, false teachers most harshly, and the following blind also.

So since it is one of the most hammered teaching by Jesus to disciples, then that should be a no brainer, the tricky part is when your not one of His and seeing the difference.

So you have to try to see the fruit, and understand the differences. But the ones on the highway are not walking the narrow road. The narrow road is "Christianity"

All others are lost, and going the wrong way. There is only one way! And Jesus tells many examples where He says many Woll come on that day, and they will even call me Lord, and I will say depart I didn't know you!

What God did in my life was inspire my brother. I watched him highly restrict and block his kids' access to all things not God (TV, music, friends, school, whatever), and then drag them many many times to foreign nations for missionary work (medical work, actually, though he'll admit he's really there to push Christianity). Now that they're all adults they all keep him at arms length and are either withdrawn or hostile. The daughter in town with her own kids limits his access to his grand kids. His oldest son went wild in college and flunked out (found freedom after years of oppression and then lost self control) and now has very little relationship with him. His youngest son is the most withdrawn (and may be in the closet). And his youngest daughter went through an extended period of cutting herself though she's over that now. Probably the only daughter who talks religion the way he does is the one living about a 7 hour drive away and i doubt that's accidental.

We were all raised Catholic and he used to be as Catholic as the Pope, but when the Catholic church wouldn't sponsor him to travel to do missionary work he switched to some Protestant branch which does and then started telling the rest of us we'd go to hell unless we switched, too. (But personally, I bet he'd have turned Jewish even if it turned out the Jews were the ones arranging missionary trips.)

So that's what God has done within my life. Created an alienated family and a brother who reminds the rest of us every once a while why he will be saved and the rest of us won't. Thanks God.

Saintnow(3684) Disputed
1 point

So it's God's fault that you are not saved? It's God's fault you are bitter toward Him? He has not done enough for you to be thankful to Him?

You are on your way to Hell, and you do need to be saved. I don't know if your brother is saved or not, but it does sound like he got saved......and Jesus said He would cause divisions in families. When a person from a family where none of them are saved and all of them are religious or "found freedom after years of oppression and then lost self control" meets the Savior in reality and gets saved, it caused a separation from lost people. Everybody is bound by the consequences of their own sin, if they won't renounce their sin they won't get out of it. The family members you are talking about need to take responsibility for their own sins. And you need to take responsibility for your own sins. I'm sure you said and did things to harden whatever alienation you feel exists between you and family members.

Do you know my name?

Grenache(6053) Disputed
1 point

Of course not. It's the apostles' fault for spinning fantastic tales and warnings decades after Jesus' death which now in the modern day has led to 10,000+ branches of Christianity disagreeing on the what the key message is and how to live their lives. And it's the fault of literal interpretation of the Bible by people like yourself which keeps reving up believers like my brother to the point they're ready to do harm to their own lives and the lives of others all in the name of God. If people just found the good things and accepted them in the context of this is what ancient human peoples said when they were inspired by God it would do away with a whole lot of the modern nonsense of you must this or you must not that.

I'm actually not bitter. i still love my brother and we still talk. But I'm not going to follow in his footsteps and alienate my entire family.

having just joined this site i was hopping to find some well structured arguments to and for topics that i find interesting.i wanted to learn from different people and hear their opinions however reading through most of the posts so far it worries me to read that some of the people on here i dare say come across as extremists.

i keep seeing comment after comment on being dammed to hell for your sins, being an atheist myself i wanted views that challenged my own and gave me some thing to think about instead i find people claiming to be religious not acting in a very religious way, strengthening my own views further.

for myself atheism came about because i always asked questions about the world and the universe and having gone to a religious school i did not like the answers they gave me, such as god made the world and he did it in seven days i would again ask how did he do that and i would be told because he is all powerful and i would continue to ask why to the point where my teachers could not answer me and would become frustrated.

however when i went to a science class it was completely different, i would ask why and how all the time and the science teachers eyes would light up because he would get to explain why this happened to the point where we got to one he could not answer but he wouldn't be disgruntled he would just say we don't know yet and that idea that i can be the one to discover things that are yet unknown to all of human kind just ignited my curiosity.

Those "we don't know yet" questions will never be answered because they are asking the questions from an erroneous starting point and refusing to admit error. Oh dear :S. Right, just to offer a few clarifications to the overwhelming errors you have made about me:

Firstly, your gender-specific reference to me (“dude”) is incorrect. When responding to (or in your case sniping at) someone it is recommended to glance at their site profile to ensure you are actually using the appropriate pronouns amongst other terms. This really does not consume too much of anyone’s precious time. Failure to do this only showcases laziness and had you deigned to do this you would have noted that I am female and respond accordingly.

Secondly, unless you want to spend time dissecting all of my dialogue with various debaters, you have zero knowledge of how we interact or their perception of me…unless, you are professing to be a mind reader. That would be an altogether arrogant assumption.

Thirdly, this is compounded by you also presuming to know how I converse offline outside of this forum. I have an extensive vocabulary, as the average intellectual does. Never once have I been informed by others, in reality or online, that they feel this is a barrier to our discussions, ergo it should be of no concern to you. That you cannot comprehend this is no fault of mine.

Lastly, this diatribe of yours is in no direct response to my original post (which incidentally had everything to do with the debate topic). If you honestly have an issue with how I conduct myself in debates then you address my post to challenge me directly as I have done to you rather than venturing down the cowardly route of griping like a child in a separate post. You claim you are not bothered by "people like me", yet your post demonstrates otherwise.

…..So there we have it. You have made an erroneous assessment of my character on the basis of a single statement. I did not know you prior to this as I had not previously spoken with you, but examining your post presents the profile of a lazy, arrogant, bitter coward. I have had debates with non-religious people many times, but I know and believe better than to malign every single member belonging to that category ahead of conversing with them – a principle you evidently lack.

Seriously. Do step down from your horse... before it bucks.

That's not how God works. God paid for your sins with His blood. So..., if you want a bicycle you are supposed to steal it because God helps those who help themselves and then you pray for forgiveness. I hope this clarifies things for you ;)

Or...and this is my favorite option and by far the most likely: he simply does. not. EXIST.
