Thoughts on Cosplaying?
I recently just into it myself. I think it's an awesome way to socialize with like minded people. Not to mention how much fun it is :)
If you're going to be a dork, it's better to do so with like minded individuals. That's not an insult either, most people are dorks about their favorite things, in the sense that that's all they can think about or only thing they have knowledge about. I'm a dork about a few things in my daily life. That's why I can say this with no intention of malice that being a dork is fun with other similar dorks. I think it is an interesting form of expressions and will likely take a certain amount of inhibition away from the players. It would be interesting to see if people ended up cosplaying more like the characters or more like themselves (i.e. which traits were dominant). My guess is it is fun and therapeutic at the same time! Cosplay is a fun creative outlet. I have friends who do it with varying degrees of skill. I have participated a few times but do not have time to make stuff myself. Hitting up gaming or comic conventions is fun and it helps add to the mood. If you are a lady though, be prepared for unwanted attention, more so than you usually get. Some guys purely objectify the women and some guys are kind of jerky about them. Women who like geek culture are often questioned about their legitimate likes. It is as if women have to prove they like things like Zelda, Metroid or things related to comics, whereas if you are a guy it is just accepted. That being said don't let a vocal minority hold you back. 1
