I read a book a while ago called The Sane Society, by Erich Fromm. I'd highly recommend it. Fromm basically talks about how a culture itself can become neurotic, and how that problem self-perpetuates because everybody who doesn't fit into the society is therefore viewed as sick.

What you see in America is ultimately the final result of capitalism. It's a place of haves and have nots. A place where greed trumps all. A place where people are prepared to destroy the Earth itself in the quest for yet more profit.

I'll be honest with you. I mean, you can probably tell anyway, but American culture disgusts me. I grew up during the 80s and still remember how America was mythologised through film and media. It's a system which is glued together only by mass marketing and propaganda. People who are born poor die poor, and that is true in probably 99 percent of cases. But of course, you never hear the stories of any of these people because that doesn't help anybody sell capitalism.

Somebody -- I think maybe Alofri -- put it well the other day when he said that Americans fall too easily for sales pitches. That's the main problem I think. Consumerism only works when people are gullible enough to keep buying stuff they don't really need, so the American populace is as naive and gullible a culture as has ever existed on Earth.
