Was I wrong?

homeless

There was this homeless guy on the median of a busy intersection with a sign that read, "Homeless. Will work for food. God bless." I felt sorry for him so I rolled down the window and I called him over as I scrounged around on the floor on the passenger side. When he got to me I reached out and gave him the classified ads for that day. He got really irate so I told him he could have the whole newspaper and handed it to him. But he just kept on yelling. It was during his rant that I realized that all he wanted was money. And that stuff about "God bless" was also a bunch of BS. He was cursing up a storm and wasn't acting very Christian at all. So when the light turned green I took off. Now I ask you, was I wrong?

People just don't get me. I try to do the right thing and this is the thanks I get?

Well he was asking for work and when you gave him the chance to do so he got pissed because you weren't making it easier by just giving him the money.

I think you were right for doing what you were doing.

I get you Joe! This is simply your version of doing the right thing but the right thing can be accomplished in many ways. I'm not so naive that I don't believe the guy wanted some bucks to chow down but I also think that when one comes across a situation like this choices can be made. For instance, if you have a home and need your lawn mowed or your garage cleaned out, one might offer him food for work in that way. Unfortunately we all are not very trusting of a guy who looks that way and offer him a chance to come to your home to perpetrate who knows what manner of mischief. Another remedy might have been to direct him to the nearest soup kitchen or Salvation Army to pick up some cheap duds so he can work. They may know of a shelter he can be directed to. In the end I think you did what you thought was right to do and there's no shame in that. Since he didn't thank you for stopping I will...Thanks for stopping for all the right reasons while this guy raked you over the coals for all the wrong ones.

no way are you wrong!!! there is nothing wrong with trying to help a homeless person out now and then. if he wanted to rant on about you giving him the paper then he obviously must not be that desperate becuase otherwise he would have taken it gracefully and looked for a job, then boom!! there is his money... u did the right thing in my books joe

You don't understand hobos at all. The only reason they say "Will work for food." is because they want you to feel sorry for them and just give them food anyways. I currently have a hobo living with me in my own home now (my "sister". . . as my parents call her anyways) who is always asking people to take care of her and her family, but when the oportunity arises she makes someone else do the work for her and keeps the gain for herself. My parents don't mind because she is "family" but it's been bugging me and whenever I open my mouth in protest I get into trouble. -.-

So with all that said, hobos want the gain without the effort to get there. That's why they don't have houses!

I doubt you were wrong, however I kinda find it hard to believe that at your age that you don't understand what this person was about - the sign is to attract - the motive is CASH - thrusting a newspaper in his face and suggesting he get a job is just asking for it - and you managed to secure a mouth bashing from this person - which in your mischievousness - which is apparent in your debates on CreateDebate, you so rightly deserved !

Maybe you should fill your wallet with blank paper money and talk alot if you feel the urge again to help someone in need - but not help them at all (see video)

In one sense it was pretty funny--the whole situation. In another sense, I'm not sure who to feel more sorry for: you or the homeless guy.

A mature, capable, sane, polite adult should know better than to provoke the guy. A poor bum like that should know he's going to get job offers and have some kinda' comeback.

The jobless in Seattle used to have very witty comebacks for why they couldn't accept a job at a warehouse nearby. I had a friend who managed a warehouse and there was ALWAYS work available. He had an open policy: show up and get paid. I used to hand his card out to anyone needing a little cash. But those homeless guys on the corner with a sign invariably responded with something inane. Or just ignored my offer altogether. LOL

Anyway, what they need isn't a job or money or or even food: they need psychiatric attention. They are on the corner attracting attention because they have something in their heads or biochemistry preventing them from functioning appropriately in society.

As to whether you were wrong: yeah. Leave 'em be. No need to provoke 'em. That's just YOU seeking attention.

Shounds like you were wrong about thinking that homeless guy wanted to look for a job in the classifieds.

Yep. If you're gonna' give a homeless person a classifieds ad section and pretend as if you've done them a world of good, you're gonna' have to finish the job: give them a warm bath, proper attire, at least one phone call, a drive to the appointment etc. What else can they do with the classifieds except wipe their ass after a dump? You expect them to just waltz into a place all homeless'd out and get a job?

Wait a minute, I did do him a world of good. I mean, not only did I give him the classified section, I gave him the whole paper! And a news paper has many uses. He could have used it for entertainment by reading the funnies or Dear Abby. He also could have cliped cupons, get the latest sports scores, see how the stock market is doing or whacked off to the women's underwear section! And, later that night, he could have used it as a blanket to keep warm. Funally, if he had fragile objects in his shopping cart, he could have wraped them and protected them with newspaper. What more could he have asked for?

You weren't wrong. We see those people at intersections here in Houston. They're not there for the food, or for jobs, or for anything else except money. They're professional panhandlers.

A number of us do community work here in Houston. We've come to know the difference between the homeless and these people (who give the homeless a bad name).

We've actually tried to bring some of these people to shelters for food, clothing and quarters, but they refused. They were much more content to stay there.

Generally, these folks panhandle around overpasses. They have a pile of stuff, that looks like bedding, or some type of ragged backpack.

The assumption that most drivers-by come to is that these poor people are sleeping under the overpasses.

I have seen people sleeping under the interstate (and in another life, have done it myself). But I have never seen these panhandlers sleeping under the overpasses. When the sun goes down, they mysteriously disappear, with their stuff.

There are needy folk who live under overpasses, and sometimes panhandle. An experienced eye (and ear) can come to learn the difference.

Well, this guy was really giving the homeless a bad name! I mean, it's because of that guy that I will no longer hand out the classifieds. Now some poor homeless guy it's going to suffer from all of this and because of one bad apple.

No you were right Joe. Not only was that funny, you really gave that man an opportunity to find a job. His loss!

What did you expect? For him to whip out his cell phone and three-piece suit from his backpack and start calling away? I understand giving someone some food instead of cash when their sign says they're hungry, but classifieds? Get real.
