We are becoming overwhelmingly dependent on computers - a good or bad thing?

Computers have opened a whole new world of possibilities for us. It is now easier to gain information on world events; you can even find a job in the internet; you can spread advocacies to a large number of people all over the world; and most importantly it is now easier to be connected with one another via social network sites even if you are on the other side of the globe and als allow people to understand each other and know more people. Although many people says that the computer is the bad thing but it is who uses the computer and who take advantages of the use of its power. As you said it is who uses the computer and who take advantages of the use of its power. This power has caused many crimes to happen, the power has been a advantage to most but also a bigger disadvantage to all. The back part is rubbish.

I realize that being dependent upon a computer is a bad thing, however I enjoy them so well... :)

But the bad part is if computers all went down our whole world would collapse, so yeah, it's really a really bad thing to be dependent upon them.

So what if u enjoy, it is not a good thing, you are not giving a point here. Computers are bringing bad to not only earth but humans too.

While I am supporting "Good," I do not believe becoming fully dependent on a computer is a great thing. I do not believe as a whole we are becoming overwhelmingly dependent on computers as a whole. Some people obviously are and as such are losing the ability to communicate and operate in the physical rather than cyber world. I feel these people are just the few who are often emphasized by media and as such become what people believe to be society as a whole. I do personally think that the abilities and accessibility of computers is a great thing, I do not think that over dependence is a good thing though as I stated I do not believe it is overwhelming society as a whole.

About 2,095,006,005of the world's population uses the internet,6,499,697,060 have a computer, people are having computers and one day they will be totally dependent. They are losing ability to communicate face to face. You are not stating anything here.

Yet the fact still remains that it is personal opinion, therefore I am stating something. I am stating my opinion, which you have the right to rebut of course though you are throwing out an assumption that one day they will be totally and utterly dependent upon the computer.

To my knowledge many people are NOT losing the ability to communicate off of the computer, often the internet is used to communicate when people are unable to communicate face to face such as you and I. However those who are unable to communicate off of the computer are also existent do not get me wrong, I do not believe the number of said peoples are as high as people believe.

It's the next stage in the progress of humanity. Computers have made so many things possible.

Yes, they have made many things possible, but it also opens the gateway to hacking and similar stuff like online theft. It brings us away from our studies.

It has downsides, but do the downsides outweigh the upsides?

Crime existed before computers were around; computers didn't invent theft, theft simply moved onto a new platform. Sabotage, scams, and the like were all around before the advent of computers.

Distraction from studying also existed in many forms before we had computers. Computers just gave us an alternative distraction, nothing more. And unlike many other distractions (like partying or playing sports), computers can also help you with your study.

Computer have made things possible, but over relying on computer will worsen your eyesight, and make you much more lazier, tempt you to use computer everyday, causing addiction to computer games etc, sitting in front of the computer everyday is also unhealthy as you exercise less.

At the end of the day, even though we are too dependent on the computer, we still can't change our habit of being dependent on the computers. but even though we are very dependent on the computers, we know how to use the good side of the computer and we know when to stop using the computer and we know that what is good about the computer and what is bad about the computer. so i think that although we are dependent on the computers, it is not a so bad thing for our generations. and if you go other company to see inside of a company, we know that almost all the company has one computer on each one of the table. so i think that since computer is not going to extinct from the world, so it is not a so bad thing to be dependent on computers. and also, computers are the new trends introduced to this world, so being dependent on computer is just being on the pace of the new world of fantastic technology. so overall, if you think that it is not a good thing to be too dependent on computers, i will ask you one question, can you live without a computer at home? no? if yes, you are out of the pace of this new world.

Like every other thing we do, everything has to be done in moderation. So, although computers are giving us an advantage in today's society, we also have to be well-reminded of both its advantages and disadvantages. Becoming overwhelmingly dependent on computers can be a good AND a bad thing. It all depends on what it is used for. For example, if we are to do an assignment virtually, computers can come in handy because it come complete with spelling and grammar error check-er-thingie-whatchamacallit. Also, it saves more paper and more trees form being cut. On the other hand, with the founding of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, users are becoming distracted to complete even the simpler of tasks. Therefore, one must know when is a good time to use computers for work and when to use computers for leisure.

In today's society, Computers are playing a very important role. Computers serves as a handy man towards us. Computers come really handy when we are looking for information. For example if we want information, we can just type in the eywords and the get the information in just seconds. Not only that, computers also serve as a online store because for those who cannot find time to got to shops to buy things, they can always order things online. This saves time for them. Apart from that, computers can help us connect to our friends and close ones through online social network. All this is possible because of computers. Computers can be bad thing but it depends on how we use it.

LIKE YOU SAID,

we can get the information in just seconds. This causes us to be very lazy and the younger generation of people does not have the skills to refer to reference books/encyclopedias.

Hello, I know I am not doing this topic, but I would like to say a few words. Niva, you said computers come in handy. While this might be true, it also makes people lazier. You also said computers could serve as an online store. But what if you get cheated? Social networks help to connect us, but you might run into a phidophile. So, in conclusion, although computers may be useful, they are also dangerous.

Good in the sense that technology advances our way of life and makes it easier.

Bad because we put our entire lives on the computer, and because Windows/Google/Yahoo! records every little thing you do. It sets the precedent for government recording everything you do, as well, since companies can give "their" data that they record about you to whoever they want, unless its in their privacy policy (which nobody wants to read, anyway).

Side: Good

The computer can give us quick answers and is so convenient.

In today's society, we are too dependent on computers.People are losing their ability to function without a computer. We no longer worry about what we are writing or typing because we all use a word processing program that has spellchecker and checks for grammar mistakes. So as you can see we depend on computers too much and are losing our ability to memorize, type, spell, or even write a grammatical correct sentence. In many countries students no longer have to copy notes by hand from the blackboard; instead the teacher gives them a photocopy. Rather than messy ink and pen, students present a typed-up copy of their assignments.

In my opinion, spelling skills have definitely deteriorated in recent years. So many young people use mobile phones to send text messages where speed and conciseness are more important than spelling or grammar. Some teachers complain that these students take the same attitude toward their assignments.

Also , people take the benefits of computers for granted and turn it into bad things. For example , young teens get addicted to computer games and this addiction in turn brings about harmful consequences , the worst being death. The baby of a computer , the laptop , causes radiation to human skin , 'toasting' our skin , when we prop it on our lap.

Being dependent on computers is a bad thing cos with it , people turn to internet buying instead of shopping in real life malls. In future , there could even be no more more malls , and even grocery shopping will take place online. Its just that serious.

Radiation isn't really a case here. There's little to no evidence that there is significant causation between computer, even general techonological use and cancer. And while, yes, there are quite detrimental health effects of using the computer so much, there are only a very few who will suffer directly. Everything's bad in excess, of course, but it's just not really got to that stage. I don't know about you, but my family and I, my friends, pretty much everyone I know, are all still perfectly literate, healthy members of society who write regularly (even my mother in IT).

And you can't just focus on the costs - the great benefit that computers bring to us vastly outweigh the odd obsessive user developing anti-social behaviour and arthritis.

The clue is in the title, 'overwhelmingly dependent'.

Whilst computers are fantastic tools in so many ways, our over-dependence on them is debilitating.

Real life is going on outside, and there's no substitute for experience!

Side: Bad

The motion states that we are being too/ overwhelmingly dependent on computers, which mean we are too reliant on the computer and its uses. Surely, it is not only the computer itself which is at fault-but also the Internet!

The computer is a powerful tool made to bring convenience to our work and the Internet is created to bring the world's information together. But nowadays, these features are exploited so much, we are almost taking them for granted! Take for example, when asked to do a research, what will most of the 20th century urban students do? Turn on the computer and access the internet. If computers are not allowed, students will surely groan and complain, and cannot or will not start their work. Whatever happened to the flipping actions done through pages of encyclopedias and reference books?

And in a more practical or realistic point of view- what happens if there is a major black out? No more electricity to the computers, or desktop at least. There will be lots of complaining and frustration going on as there will be no access to the internet to hook up with others or receive the latest information on the web. Eventually, people will blame the absence of the computer's help for halting their work too.

This is why we are too dependent on our computers in a way or another, as we need them for most things. The problem is that we are too hooked up to the computer to mind other alternatives of some things we do. When the power of computers are to shut down, the dependance on the computer that we have will be revealed.

"Children's problem solving abilities are being considerably impaired by modern technology. Computers are the greatest inventions of the modern world and a wonderful resource for our children, but we must begin to repair the damage caused by our kids' over dependence on such facilities, before it is too late." - Jan Gamm.

Yes, we, as humans, are becoming overwhelmingly dependent on computers. This is definitely a bad thing, especially for the younger generations. They rely on computers for research, answers and information on the web, for online shopping, or perhaps just for chat. But have we considered what it would be like for the people of the younger generation to react if the computer broke down, or if there was no internet connection? What would they rely on? They would most probably abandon their research without referring to a book for the information.

Homeworks and assignments are often typed out by the students on Microsoft Word or any other document, that comes with a free spelling&grammatical;check, complete with word count, etc. This may cause laziness and illiteracy for the younger ones, relying heavily on technology to aid them in whatever problems or mistakes they might face.

Think about it - the people sitting in front of a computer all day. They lack experience in daily life, in the outside world. They become too used to online chatting, and become socially awkward outside. These are all the dangers of becoming overwhelmingly dependent on computers.

"However, in my opinion, many people using the Internet in bad side for three main reasons.

First, dangerous people use the Internet to entice someone. In the Internet we don’t know who they are, it is a cause of enticement. They chat to entice girls to rape and whoredom. Second, they use the Internet to publish about pornography multimedia. Moreover, they sell pornography VCDs on the Internet. Some people chat about this in cam frog video chat. Finally, many people use the Internet not in the right time. Some people play games too much, maybe they use the Internet while learning, it’s make bad result in many side."

I totally agree with the statement above.

This reminds of comic strip posted at an auto parts store. Pictured was a guy pointing at a part on the self and a guy behind the counter. The guy behind the counter says, "Pointing to it won't help. The computer says we don't have it, so we don't have it."

We are becoming overly dependent on computer is a bad thing.

The advance of human technology has allowed computers to be better day by day from its invention. Money is not a problem to all today, it has allowed many to buy a computer or laptop. The dependence of computers have enabled sales online, chatting and even home work which have led to many problems, such as myopia, addiction, lazyliness, and even crimes like cyberbullying.

Myopia has caused eye problems to adults and even teenagers and now even toddlers. Addiction has caused children to be addicted to online games. Children are now playing too much on computer like FACEBOOK. Computers has allowed crimes to happen like hacking and cyberbullying. Many today have a computer. I feel that dependence has caused a major impact on our life.

One good thing about computers is that it frees up the human mind to be more creative. We don't have to spend all our time organizing and looking for information, crunching numbers. And it has given us the capability of connecting with people from around the world as easy as it is to talk over the back fence in your own yard...sometimes, depending on who your neighbor is, and the weather, sometimes it's actually easier to be global than it is to be local.

On the other hand, computerization of our society can make us numb to each other, where we sit in front of our safe little boxes and deal with each other that way instead of face to face. It also has the capability of tempting us into making some really stupid choices. It has become a huge distraction for most of us, and in some cases a full blown addiction. AND lets not forget that with computers has come a whole new and unexpeced wave of high tech crime, and allowed the slimiest among us to hide even more carefully, becoming even slimier and making things worse for everyone.

When technology is used as a tool...and even to the extent that we rely on computers as tools to enhance our lives...it is a great thing. But when it starts to stand in the way of developing character then it's not so good.

I feel that the reliance on computers will be a bad thing. In the case of a global epidemic and the supply of electricity is cut, people who rely too much on computers will not be able to cope with the lack of computers. I feel that we should not rely to much on it as computers also takes up energy and could cause harm to the environment. Communication could be taken up by computers and this could mean that people do not talk face to face anymore. Could this spell the end of people meeting up for various purposes, as talking on online social sites could be more " convenient "? THINK ABOUT IT

Kids don't learn how to socially develop because of these social networking sites.

You hear about computer nerds. People who sit in front of a computer till they are in their 40's or their life.

Chinese "Gold Farmers" for the popular MMORPG World Of Warcraft (I was a player) have been known to be found dead on their keyboard due to malnutrition.

Sometimes when a brand new PC game gets released some people are known to wear diapers so they don't have to go shit in the bathroom because they can't pull themselves away.
