Guns had been outright banned under the previous Weimar Republic and Hitler reversed that decision, choosing to arm the entire population (with some exceptions, such as Jews). Although, with that said, even with the restrictions in place Jews were estimated to have owned as many as 200,000 guns. As you are probably aware, the guns didn't help. Side: Yeah..
