The "chicken" would have evolved from a single cells organism which replicated via the process of mitosis. Over the centuries, the organism would have evolved into a multicellular organism which would have reproduced most likely via an asexual mechanism. Centuries later, evolution continues on it's path and the demand for greater genetic variety would have stemmed the more common male/female reproductive mechanism with either an internal or external genital system.

IN short, the chicken came first although the species which first laid that egg wouldn't not have been recognizable as a chicken by todays standard.

Well where did the egg come from? It was just laying in the garden and Adam said "this is an egg?"

Side: Chicken

The chicken came first because it was created first before the 1st egg could be laid.

To be honest, without a mother or anything to hatch the egg, nevermind feed the damn newborn animal, the standpoint of the 'egg' coming first makes no sense. I don't really care HOW it happened, tbh.

goes to KFC Jk. But all this talk of poultry is making me hungry...

Wow this such a hard question...after thinking for a long time,I still think that chicken came first. If not, where do eggs come from?will they be able to hatch themselves? Such a great mystery,I think.

Side: Chicken

When God created the world, He made all the animals as they are outside the egg or womb, etc. Adam didn't have to wait for (no idea how long it takes for an egg to hatch) the egg to hatch before he named all the animals and plants. Period.

Side: Chicken

The chicken came first. Think about it the egg would not be able to survive without warmth it would be dead. Another reason is because of my religion.

God made chickens first, not the egg, when he created the earth. So it does not make sense that the egg would come first since the chicken had to lay the egg. Its like God made adam first, not a fetus.

The answer is… a circle has no beginning! I chose the chicken just cos it came first in the sentence.

Side: Chicken

An egg has to be ferterlised by a chicken! So a Chicken came first!

Side: Chicken

The chicken because from the very beginning, when Adam named the animals, the chicken was just there. Then it laid the eggs, which laid the eggs, which laid the eggs, and so forth.

The chicken came first.

Duh!

Eggs can't even breathe hard.

But, the egg is a chicken isn't it Chuz. The egg is no less a chicken that a 3 week fetus is a human. Right?????

Moron.

Eggs were around much longer than chickens. In fact, one egg had the first chicken in it.

Side: Egg

Im gonna say the egg because the chicken probably evolved from another animal (trex) and thus it was like trex lays an egg, chicken pops out.

Yeah

actually the egg the trex laid would be considered a trex egg

Reptiles lay eggs, amphibians lay eggs, fish lay eggs.

Side: Egg

The egg came first. Chickens are birds, which evolved from dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were reptiles. Reptiles are egg-laying animals. So the egg was already in use long before birds (and therefore chickens) arose.

Side: Egg

The process came about when either enough mutations, or enough selective breeding happened to cause the next offspring to be what we would now call a chicken. The egg literally would have to have come first unless the first organism to walk on land was already a chicken and it adapted to laying eggs.

Side: Egg

I will say the egg came first because the chicken was probably originally a different animal. The first chicken came out of an egg, so technically it was a chicken egg, which means no matter what the egg came first.

Side: Egg

According to evolution, there was no first chicken. There is just gradual change, so every creature is the same species as its parent. So some of the other points people have made don't work.

I am posting on this side because as a few others have already stated reptiles and fish lay eggs. Thus eggs came about earlier in the evolutionary tree than birds

This would mean that the egg came first.

Side: Egg

Lizards lay eggs and have since the Triassic era. Chickens are new relatively so the egg came first.

Side: Egg

The argument is somewhat flawed, I think what you mean to say is "What came first the chicken or the chicken egg?" well ironically enough the proto-chicken laid the first egg that would later become known or recognized as having the traits of a stereotypical chicken.

However the saying can be interpenetrated alternatively as an analogy for evolution, which as the portion of the theory relying on the first collection of molecules to be considered life would be a single organism and therefore a "chicken"

i think the egg came first because when life on earth was just started to form it is said that the amoeba was the first thing to appear , then slowly slowly the bacteria must have gone into a calcium shell and there it undergoes the process of changing into a chick so the egg hatched and the chick came out of the egg...
