What age to tell a kid you're gay?
I have been on-and-off in a homosexual relationship for the last few years. A few years ago I was an au pair and I went to visit them recently. The kid I used to look after was asking me when I am going to get married and how many girlfriends I've had. After a lot of pestering I eventually just said "maybe I will just marry [the name of the guy I've had relations with]". Would you habe done the same? What is the appropriate age?
I hesitated in telling this kid because part of his family is very Catholic. Generally though I think any age is appropriate to tell a child. To kids a relationship is not about sex... It's about love. They can understand that perfectly at any age and there is nothing perverse or damaging about having this knowledge.
How old was the kid? My initial thought is, if he was bringing it up and kept pushing it then the truth tends to be best. It's not like you went into detail about your sex life, you simply said you may marry your current boyfriend. If the parents have some questions to answer later then they have some questions to answer later. But again, as long as someone doesn't go into explicit detail about their sex life.....it's fine, you're just telling the kid you are in love with and loved by another consenting adult.

When I tell a child that I am in love with another man they dont hear anything about sexual orientation, they only hear about love. It probably hadn't crossed his mind that we would be having sex.

I am not saying that kids should have access to porn; having access to porn and telling a kid that you are gay are VERY different things. Children are suppose to do what their parents tell them to do. If I told my parents I did not want to go to Church (which most kids would say), they would laugh at me and tell me I will do what they tell me to do.
When kids grow up, they can then decide if they want to go to Church. If you don't go to Church, then the child probably won't.
Even if you don't believe in God, your child could benefit from the values lifted up in Church. It's nice having friends who are not pressuring your child to do irresponsible things.
I truly believe that being somewhat religious actually helps you go on. A loved one passed away recently, so I went to talk to a priest and he was very reassuring. He didn't say anything religious, he just consoled me and told me everything was going to be okay. I really like that about church. That's why I want to get him to go, to experience a culture that's been around since the Middle Ages.

With that said, I don't personally think there is anything wrong with your sexual orientation, and if it were your own family then each family makes their own choice about how old is old enough to discuss it.
And I'll also add that if it were a case of a probably gay child asking an adult whom they suspect of being gay whether or not they are then it might be acceptable simply because the social support for being gay is so hard to find at a young age. But the implication of the way you tell the story is the child is probably straight and was guessing that you were straight, which invalidates using this last scenario to justify coming out about it to a minor.
