We tried it and it didn't work, because this is a different sort of thing, the story and ... said, "I'm a friend of Ed's, and yeah, that wasn't a great way for all that to go down. ... Whereas everyone else, it's some bad guy who they've gotta take down. ... I've been frustrated with my brothers at times, or family, but I'm the only one who ...
I am a Marvel girl, and the Avengers are so much cooler than the Justice League. The great thing about the Avengers is that almost every hero in the Marvel universe has been a part of the group (remember the West Coast Avengers?).
The great thing about the Avengers is that almost every hero in the Marvel universe has been a part of the group (remember the West Coast Avengers?).
Not an argument that's exclusive to one side. I could just as easily say: "The great thing about the Justice League is that almost every hero in the DCU has been a part of the group (remember the Justice League Europe?)."
Besides, I also remember Dr. Druid, Starfox and the Sentry.
Also, it was essentially the success of the JLA that led to the Marvel Universe as we know it. The FF and the Avengers were BOTH created to emulate the team.
It is true that Marvel saw the success of the JLA and Jack Kirby even copied the layout of their cover when drawing the first issue of the Fantastic Four, but that does not take away from the fact that the Avenger characters have graced the big screen far more than any of the members of the JLA, which shows how much more popular they are (The Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor). So while you are right that the blueprint is the JLA, the Avenger are not only better but more popular ( and you and I sir are officially at odds with each other!).
Well, I certainly won't argue with Marvel being the more popular company. That's been the case since the 70s. But two contentions:
1. Judging the popularity of the characters by outside media can be misleading. By your criteria (number of movies), DC would have been the more popular company in 97 since at that point they had 9 Major motion picture releases (4 Superman, 4 Batman, and Steel, and 2 more if you added the Swamp Thing movies) while Marvel only had the Dolph Lundgren Punisher movie and....ummm...Howard the Duck. Yet Marvel was seriously trouncing DC in sales the whole decade. And about the 90s, at least the early 90s, that was a banner period for comics, but outside media was fairly limited. The 00s were an unprecedented decade for superhero movies, cartoon series are abundant, both companies have some live series on the way and there have been several high profile video games in the genre over the past few years. But until last year, comics sales have been utterly atrocious for quite some time. Further, would you say that Blade (3 movies and a live action TV series) is more popular than Captain America (1 movie, upcoming Avengers appearance and some direct-to-home and TV movies)?
2. Popularity is often more an indicator of advertising and good timing than anything else. DC hasn't had the same initiative and marketing savvy as Marvel has regarding film, but what does this have to do with the characters themselves?
So let's get to the point: WHY do you think the Avengers are better/more compelling than the JLA, (excluding popularity and criteria that can be equally applied to both)?
and you and I sir are officially at odds with each other!
LOL! All of these heated religious debates, and my first hostile is a Marvel Zombie :P
I beg your pardon sir, I am no Marvel zombie, I happen to like some DC heroes! And yes, this means war, although I must admit it is something trivial to be hostile about, but nevermind that.
You are correct that the popularity of the Marvel brand could just be because of better advertising, but the possibility remains that it could also be because they are more liked by the public.
The point is that I like the Avengers because they are a cooler group (and I know that my opinion is relative, smarty pants!).
Post script: The fact that the most exciting, super bad, and incredibly hot superhero in the universe is a member of the team makes them tops in my book (no, I am not speaking of the Black Panther, I am talking about Ant Man).

Answer A) Let me guess: Batman. Maybe Rorschach?
Answer B) Is this like that time when Sarah Palin said she is not opposed to homosexuals because she had some gay friends?

Ah yes, the general public. The same general public that thinks that Little Wayne is a great rapper. The same general public where the majority are creationists. The same general public that don't usually read comics and rely on Super Friends for their opinion of Aquaman...Yeah, they sure are good judges :P
The point is that I like the Avengers because they are a cooler group (and I know that my opinion is relative, smarty pants!).
So is mine: The Avengers hang out in mansions and skyscrapers (and briefly, an artificial Island). The JLA hang out in orbiting satelites and on the moon! Epic potential: DC+1. The Avengers have rarely attempted to establish their presence outside of NYC (which is already very well protected by EVERY OTHER Marvel hero.) The JLA have had embassies all over the Earth and their members represent all regions of America. When DC wants to do a big 7 line-up, they just have to stick in their most popular members (and Martian Manhunter) and problem solved. When Marvel wants to do it, they have to bring in questionable additions like Spider-Man (oh goody, ANOTHER Marvel Street Level Hero), Wolverine (because starring in 692 title a month just wasn't enough), and now we have...Daredevil?
Further, Marvel heroes seem to have a quota to fill on being unstable and untrustworthy. Hulk, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow (and that's just from the line-up listed in the debate description, don't think I've forgotten about Dr. Friggin Druid.)
So, maybe, MAYBE the Avengers are cooler (but they don't have a moon base). But the JLA are better.
The fact that the most exciting, super bad, and incredibly hot superhero in the universe is a member of the team makes them tops in my book (no, I am not speaking of the Black Panther, I am talking about Ant Man).
"Answer A) Let me guess: Batman. Maybe Rorschach?"
No, Superman and all of the Teen Titans. Batman is a good hero, especially the way he's been made more dark over the last ten years.
"Answer B) Is this like that time when Sarah Palin said she is not opposed to homosexuals because she had some gay friends?"
LOL!! Not at all, I know a few DC comics, and I even read one once.

The general public is pretty stupid, i'll agree, but on this subject they are right because the Avengers are more popular (and spare me the Ad Populum charge!).
The JLA does have a better headquarters, and yes they have embassies all over the world, plus members from all regions of America (damn, they do sound like a better group, but I must resist all logical arguments!!) but the Avengers have the Quinjet!!
I do think Antman is a hot superhero (seriously), and I like his unique helmet, plus he is a nerd, which is sexy.
A Marvelite who likes Superman? Now I've seen it all :)
but the Avengers have the Quinjet!!
The JLA have teleporters and space ships. :P Besides, half of them don't need something as pedestrian as a jet anyway, and the ones who do already have some of the coolest pieces of machinery flying.
Okay, I'll grant you the Ant-Man's helmet is pretty rad. But out of all the good-looking nerds in Marvel, you have to swoon for one whose hobbies include spousal abuse, endangering his teammates in order to prove his worthiness and generally making poor decisions? I think Iron Man keeps him around just so people will ignore his own transgressions....

The Avengers have better things to do than spend their money on teleporters and space ships. They are smarter finanically than the JLA. I wonder how much debt the JLA has? I mean, where do they get all the money to purchase all that extremely expense equipment?

Ant Man is a flawed soul, but a hero nevertheless. Besides, Ant man can shrink the entire team, how cool is that?

Sure, when your mission statement is to protect the world from any and all crises, having teleporters wouldn't be useful at all.
I mean, where do they get all the money to purchase all that extremely expense equipment?
Significant financial contributers have included Bruce Wayne, Ollie Queen, Maxwell Lord (all in about the same tax bracket as Stark, if not wealthier) the US Government and the United Nations. Plus, much of the equipment they use can be synthesized free of charge using duplicates of the Kryptonian technology held in the Fortress of Solitude, and can be assembled and transported quickly by the League themselves considering the power and skill sets of its members.
Besides, Ant man can shrink the entire team, how cool is that?
Atom has adapted his technology to shrink others in stories in JLA and Superman. Indeed, with his knowledge of science and technology, he has done a lot for the League. You know what he hasn't done? Build an unstoppable robot that wants to exterminate all humans. Because in the DCU, that is what villains do :P
What are you, some kind of JLA historian? Your knowledge of comics is scary. I concede, the JLA is a better group but I still like the Avengers more (I gotta go buy a couple of JLA comics now), and you are most assuredly an avowed enemy for making me look like a total fool in this debate! :p
