What do you think about what prop 8 stands for and is doing to gay people? Explain.

A lot of people have different opinions or views towards gay people and gay marriages.  Some people are with prop 8 and some are not.  Some people believe that the government is favoring gay people over other people who believe in other things that they think we should be able to do or have here in the United States.

First of all, I think one thing should be clarified. Prop 8 is not a national policy; it's for California only, so it can't really be debated on the Federal level.

I support the referendum and proposition initiatives; because they give control to the people. Prop 8, in my view, was flawed, yet it was what the people wanted, and it is what they voted for. It's essentially tyranny of the majority, something that is bound to happen in a democratic society. It occurs when the majority is opposed to the rights of a minority.

The problem with Prop 8 is , at its core, it opposes the 14th amendment of the Constitution, which is the law of the land. That is why it should be overruled by the either the Californian Supreme Court of the Federal Supreme Court.

It's essentially tyranny of the majority

In order for it to be a "tyranny" the majority would have deny gays marriage benefits. Prop 8 does not deny gays marriage benefits. It just says that gay unions cannot be labeled as marriage. This means that gays are free cohabitate with who ever they want and they can even go out and get "marriage" benefits (just under a different name).

This is a really important distinction because the majority of the people in California are for gays having the same benefits as married couples. But these same people voted against calling gay unions a marriage.

Gay activists are misrepresenting the issue by claiming that those who voted for prop 8 are homophobic bigots and compare their plight to that of blacks during the civil movement. However, not one gay person has been sprayed with a fire hose, thrown in jail or beaten by the police during a protest.

People who demonize the opposition, for whatever the reason, whatever the cause, is just as bad as any racist bigot. They are the same. There's no difference between them.

Yet, because they can't be married Gays don't get the same state or federal benefits as married couples. There is no provision, as of yet, that gives marriage benefits to civil unions on the state or federal level, so under this pretense benefits are being denied to the gay populace.

There is also a right to equality that is being denied here. You state that it is equal; that gays just get a different title for their union. Yet, this a separation and, because of Brown v Board of Education separation is inherently not equal. There are rights being infringed upon.

The problem with Prop 8 is , at its core, it opposes the 14th amendment of the Constitution, which is the law of the land.

This is not true because prop 8 does NOT deprive any gay individual of his life, liberty, or property.

The only obstacle prop 8 poses is an umbrella term for a set of benefits that can be covered under a different name. Prop 8 does not prevent gays from living as married couples. The only issue is the legal benefits that are already covered under civil unions. In other words, the use of the word "marriage."

Like I've said before, few states have provision that give marriage rights to civil unions and, no federal provision exits to do so either because of DOMA. Benefits are being denied which does abridge the civil liberties of the gay population.

Proposition 8 was wrong. It is now 2015 and people can forget about Proposition 8 because the Supreme Court has declared Gay Marriage the law of the land.
