What if God wasn't real? How would society and the universe be different?

Would the sun revolve around us? Would gravity REPEL objects? Would murder and rape be a past time hobby?

What would happen???

Add New Argument

It would be horrible. People would no longer share the wealth of the world justly, but instead violently rob each other spawning massive inequality. Children would be left starving and all people would believe in different religions, even Pat Robertson could argue for legalization.

The biggest terrorists would indeed be awarded the most honorary of titles while the petty criminals would be jailed. Democracy as we know it would be tempered with by market forces and anonomous donations. How could such a world work?

1 point

Agreed.

Even so, if god wasn't real I know for certain that murder, rape, envy, torture, "terrorism", passion, love, goodness, kindess would most likely still exist. Point being that with god out of the picture, would humans still do what they do, regardless of religion or god?

What does this mean then?

I'd say a universe without god would indeed be more worse than off it is now. At least with god there can be meaning, purpose and something or someone to look believe in.

1 point

I agree, but what if the people in this "no god universe" invented religion so that people would still have meaning and rules to maintain order? Then people would think there is a god and feel like there is one.

1 point

God wasn't real, and still isn't; yet people still die for him. Are you surprised?

Here is a list of things that Christianity has done through out the years.

These are the positive contributions Christanity has made through the centuries:

-Hospitals,which essentially began during the Middle Ages

-Universities,which began during the Middle Ages.In addition, most of the worlds greatest universities were started by Christians for Christian purposes.

-Literacy and education for the masses

-Capitalism and free enterprise.

-Representative government, particulary as it been seen in the American experiment

-The seperation of political powers

-Civil liberties

-The abolition of slavery, both in antiquity and in more modern times

-Modern science

-The discovery of the new world by Columbus

-The elevation of a women

-Benevolence and charity;the good Samaritan ethic.

-The elevation of a common man

-The condemnation of adultery, homosexuality, and other sexual perversions. This has helped to preserve the human race, and it has spared many from heartache

-High regard of human life

-The civilizing of many barbarian and primate cultures.

-The codifying and setting to writing of many of the worlds languages.

-Greater development of art and music. The inspiration for the greatest works of art.

-The countless lives transformed from liabilities into assets to society because of the gospel

-The eternal salvation of countless souls

All of those wouldn't be here if God didn't exist and that is how society and the universe would be different.

Ah you guys are down-voting huh? Can't handle the truth that I said?

The truth? So deluded... You get downvotes because what you say is idiotic, is in-fucking-sane (insane if you have trouble understanding).

If it is the truth then you should be able to provide evidence. Give us the evidence, right now.

You have no evidence to suggest that hospitals wouldn't have arisen without the existence of religion; this is especially considering that hospitals are a necessity to public health and general welfare of a civilization.

You have no evidence to suggest that Universities and other learning facilities wouldn't have arisen without the existence of religion; this is especially considering that universities and other learning facilities are a necessity to the advancement of a civilization.

You have no evidence to suggest that education would not exist without religion.

Capitalism and free enterprise are as much a sham as communism and neither exist in currently in a way that is true to their purposes.

You have no evidence to suggest that representative government and separation of political powers wouldn't have arisen without the existence of religion.

I can effectively make the same argument and case against everything else you have written in your comment, so I'm not going to repeat myself that many times.

ahem

-Hospitals were technically around in the stone ages

-we just cut peoples legs off, the muslims actually used medicine

-the abolition of slavery? that god himself encouraged in the OT?

-DISCOVERY OF THE NEW WORLD?! WTF it was because of geographical science he discovered it it had nothing to do with christianity!

-ELEVATION OF WOMEN! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!

-Modern science, yeah right.

-Note that god killed someone who helped balance his ark

-The condemnation of homosexuality caused more heart ache than it stoped and incase you didnt notice will be overriden

-It bought the destruction of great cultures

-2nd commandment Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water below.” Old Testament punishment- Deuteronomy 27: 1 5 “Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image.”

-Another big NT flaw i would like to point out to you, Romans 1 :29-32 “Those filled with unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, hate for god, despite, proud, boasters, inventions of evil things, disobedience to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, unnatural affection, implacable or unmerciful nature: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death”.

Notice the word DEBATE in there?

How about listing everything it has done, including all the negatives. By the way, all of them would've been developed anyway, probably even sooner if not for religion.

Modern science does not come from religion. It comes from denying religion and what it says, since what it says was the dominant force - the kind you deny publicly and as a result you get killed.

The eternal salvation... that's just idiotic. Prove it is real, prove it happened, you can't 'cause it's not real.

The list is so stupid I'm just not gonna pick through it.

Srom(12206) Disputed

Well this is all of the postive things that happened and if God wasn't real we wouldn't have all of those things listed above.

You forgot the Crusades the Spanish Inquisition. Newsflash Columbus didn't discover the new world.

I agree with most of these statements but I have to disagree with a few.

-Hospitals,which essentially began during the Middle Ages

Doctors where first made by the romans and all the nuns did in those hospitals was give them food they didn't do much else.

-Literacy and education for the masses

The libarys where only available to higher class people. Lower class or poor people where not permited to learn how to read or write.

-Universities,which began during the Middle Ages.In addition, most of the worlds greatest universities were started by Christians for Christian purposes.

Christians greatly hindered the teachings of anatomy in their universities as they only taught them the words of galen and wouldn't let them dissect dead people to progress.

'What if God wasn't real?'

What proof is there that he IS real?

What proof is there that this universe exists this way only because of him?

I understand believable something adamantly, which isn't a terrible thing, but you cannot ask 'what if' if you do not even have proof that the variables you are asking about even exist.

'What if something didn't exist' is a question that implies you have proof that said something exists. If you do not have proof, you cannot ask the question.

Really? The streets are organized, there is no disagreement about which religion is correct and all people everywhere live good lives. No one is starving and all are accepted as gods children. Humanity feels as if it has found its direction and meaning. How can you argue against these presuppositions imposed by the debate creator?

chatturgha(1631) Disputed

By pointing out that they are presuppositions and are incorrect.

Not at all it turns out.

1 point

Damn! That would suck balls... we'd probably all be down-voted for all eternity?

Not sure if srs....

The crusades and Spanish Inquisition probably would not have happened.

Emperor(1348) Disputed

How do you know? What if they had just made it up and then persecuted people?

1 point

First of all, there is no god. so universe would not be different. and about society, it would be far more better because the religious god made by priests has made life on earth real hell.......... so i wish even this imaginary god perishes fast.....!!
