What is democratic socialism?

In your view, does it differ from social democracy? Kind of, yes. Social democracy is really about applying socialist principles to a capitalist state. It's about watering down capitalism to create a hybrid system. You could consider that to be a centrist position, whereas a democratic socialist would want classic socialism and hence would be on the left. It can get more complex though, because not every democratic socialist wants a society which is uncompromisingly 100 percent socialist either. Some would be quite willing to water socialism down by applying capitalist principles. Hence, I suppose in theory you could have a democratic socialist and a social democrat who believe in exactly the same hybrid system but who identify as two different things politically. |
