What is the best Web Browser of any platform?

Firefox. Not only is it faster and more secure than Internet Explorer (currently the most widely-used web browser), but it has a large developer community creating addons that extend the browser's functionality to almost anything imaginable.

Plus, unlike Internet Explorer, Camino, or a host of other browsers, it's cross-platform.

Take the test I posted as a link in my argument. I was using an iBook G4 running Safari, Opera, and Firefox on OS 10.5.5 w/ a 1.4Ghz G4 PPC and 1Gb DDR333. My connection if it becomes an issue is 1.5Mb down and 700Kb up... about.

Also, Opera is comfortably cross-platform.

Certainly Firefox isn't the fastest web browser out there, as these speed tests show:

Firefox vs. IE7 vs. Safari vs. Opera

Firefox 3.1 vs. Chrome vs. IE8

Of course, as the speed tests show, Safari is one of the fastest around. So if I'm going for speed only, I'd choose it over Opera. BTW, Safari is my secondary web browser when I just want to get things done fast.

However, the deciding factor that makes me go for Firefox is the addons. Opera, Safari, IE, and (for now) Chrome can't give me anything close to all the benefits of Adblock Plus, Cooliris, CustomizeGoogle, Firebug, Google Redesigned, Greasemonkey, Read It Later, ScribeFire, Stealther, Stylish, Tab Mix Plus, and Zotero.

One problem with Opera is that it can't display certain web pages. For example, last time I checked ~2 months ago, it didn't work with Meebo.com (the multiprotocol IM site).

Apple Safari is win, and this site's "Argument field Requirement" sucks.

Opera on Linux. It's fast, integrates email in a panel, searches all visited pages from the address bar, puts custom searches into context menu and supports site-specific blacklisting.

Safari is bloated, but it has come a long way in a year. It's the best overall browser for Mac OS X leopard, even with Firefox's first coco native version out.

Firefox has been my favorite browser for every platform for a long time now, but now that it's mainstream (my mom uses it, and I'm sure millions of grandma's out there use it), it's becoming bloated too. Bloat is something that I have always hated... and it just doesn't do the justice that it used to when it was light weight.

Now, for every OS that I use, Opera 9, is the better browser. It's light, dependable and pretty damn accurate when it comes to rendering.

Here are my results for this render test on different (up to date, mac) browsers:

Opera 9.52: 07.23 (Reload 06.48)

Safari 3.1.2: 06.51 (Reload 06.03)

Firefox 3.0.2: 12.56 (Reload 11.01)

Take the test!

Opera was bloated when running this test, Safari was cold, and firefox was fresh out of the install package. Firefox had no history, no caches, no bookmarks... nothing.

Also, Opera 9 comes with a lot of neat, built-in features. Blocking adverts from a clean install is as easy as right clicking a page, selecting block ad, and then clicking on the ads. They don't come back on any site, and nothing above the hierarchy from that site will show up again. It also has "widgets" but I like my widgets to stay up in my dashboard where they can't bother me.

Sure, Firefox has add ons, but what does it matter when it seems like it's already too full of add ons when it's fresh?

Oh, and IE isn't a browser anymore. It's been scientifically proven to be nothing more than a laggy virus portal.

Opera does have a fairly rich feature set built in. This article gives some of the extras it has.

This speedtest is a bit better. The scragz one is outdated (Scragz commented on the article about his speed test).

And according to this article, WebKit, the engine behind Safari, is the first to pass the Acid3 web page rendering test.

Mine still works for stopwatch-free enjoyment! I rearranged my site a couple weeks ago and it was 404ing for a bit but I fixed that today.

Firefox brought an abundance of new features to web browsing that every other browser is now mimicking. Not to mention the speed, add-ons and excellent community involved.

I've used all of the major browsers but the best one by far is Google's Chrome. Chrome is much faster than Internet Explorer for everything I do on my computer, and is very simple and customizable. Chrome has many intelligent features that are not available on any other web browser. I have had Chrome since the first week it was released and I do not have anything negative to say about it other than some website's applications do not support Chrome. When this happens, I have to go back to the old Internet Explorer and see just how slow it really is.

Opera is the best. Its fast, user friendly and has lots of nice features like enhanced tab browsing and the all important speed dial. Its light weight in terms of memory, does everything Firefox, IE, Chrome and Safari does with lots of new features.

I like Safari on my iMac Yosemite. It is now 2015 and this platform is great with me.
