What is the most common transportation in the future?

Airway

Side Score: 13
VS.

By land

We'll have to exploit the 3rd dimension. Flying cars/trains would have to be computer controlled for safety. Only those with very rigorous licenses would be allowed to fly manually. There would have to be a major breakthrough in fuel technology to enable this to happen of course.

more available highways in the air. but this is probably the distant future.

Not everyone afford traveling by air

yes, ofcourse. We're discussing about the future ;)

By land today. Airway the future

there's no more arguments. It ends. Thanks for your comments.

I will say little flying saucers like in "The Jetsons." Those flying saucers will transport folks quickly to wherever they want to go.

Airway is the best choice for the future. Following the transportation report, "airway accidents and the # of people died in airplane crash" is less than byland's

- So what will power these flying machines? What sort of power-plant with what sort of fuel?

- How many people do you imagine using the flying things at once? Like a car, most of the time only one?

- How many people per year have issues with their simple land vehicles (a lot). How do you think we'll deal with the failing of tons of flying vehicles?

There are a lot of serious problems with the airway idea, and I cannot say it won't happen, but it's extremely improbable.

All of tranportations face the energy problem, not except airway.

Do you imagine that one day, the population explosion take almost our spaces in the world. There's no more spaces for ways. So this is the time for mini-flying machine with sunlight energy. It's the time of Airway.

It's already the most common, and I suspect because of the will to combat climate change that were going to see more public transport like bullet trains in the future.

airway for people that can actually afford it, and by land for people who would rather there not be any pollution (that's me.) and by land i mean walking, bikes, skates and the like. ...maybe electric cars but i'm not sure. i still need to look in on that.

Always land transport will have it's own preference, even though the air traffic increases the land transport will be the common transport

I think it would have more to do with practicality, not so much preference (unless one prefers the more practical :P )

If you think about the automobile industries, with each car being $20,000 (for a decent one), and then the cost of insurance, and then the cost of registration and then the cost of fuel... It's already so high, how can one say that the airway could ever work practically?

So less people die on airlines today, that means almost nothing. If the machines had the ability to fly themselves, there is still a great change that people will not have them maintained properly, mechanical failures will happen, if you don't have to by insurance you'll have to buy life insurance, and then the fuel will be extremely expensive if you're not using some sort of ram jet and electric turbines or man powered propeller things... The cost of owning or using one of these thing would be 4x more expensive, not to mention the fuel... and I'm only guessing that'll be for a cheap one.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, travel by land is bar the far the most common transportation in the United States. Here are some facts from the North American Transportation Highlights Report issued in 1996 (surprisingly, this is the most up-to-date report I could find on the BTS website):

US Passenger Miles Traveled (from Table 5 of the report):

Air: 445 Billion Miles

Land: 3,780 Billion Miles

My guess best guess is that a share shift from land to air will continue to occur over time, however, we have a long, long way to go before air eclipses air (in the US, at least).

I think the transportation of the future will be increasingly rail-oriented. As electric rail and maglev technology become cheaper, safer, and more efficient, more communities will encourage their use.

And from a safety standpoint, these advanced trains are safer than personal vehicles or aircraft.

Side: By land

It will be by foot or land prolly bycycles or car.

Air travel is too expensive, if teleportation were to come into the picture the most common transportation will still be foot as teleportation and Air travel will be too expensive and our feet is too give us the ability to walk.

By land because it will be more eco friendly because its safer to create eco friendly engines for land vehicles than air vehicles. Plus traveling by land will become much easier and there will be less traffic due to driving laws due to the huge population.
