There is a story that parallels this. Milarepa journeyed throughout the world, seeking Truth. One day as he was going down a steep, rough mountain path, he saw an old man carrying a heavy burden, bent under its weight, trudging up the path toward him. As the old man struggled and stumbled up the path, his face was serene and happy, even when he tripped and fell to one knee, skinning it badly. Milarepa saw that this man surely knew what he had traveled so long and so far to find. As they came abreast of each other on the narrow path, Milarepa addressed the old man. "Venerable sir, I see plainly that you have attained enlightenment. What is enlightenment like?" The old man looked thoughtfully at Milarepa for a moment. He then took his bundle off of his shoulder, set it on the ground, and stood up straight. He smiled, looked Milarepa in the eye, and nodded to show that this was his answer. Milarepa understood immediately, and said, "Thank you. I see. Please allow me one more question. What comes after of enlightenment?" The old man thought for a moment, then bent to heft his burden back onto his shoulder, and continued his struggle up the steep path. 1
