What is wrong with the World Wide Web?

I love the World Wide Web but feel it's a mess, so I am inherently biased. I cannot decide on the biggest problem.

My problems include:

  • Disorganized web
  • Advertising like Flash advertisements
  • Different browser platforms: Firefox/IE/Safari/Opera/Chrome
  • cloud computing prohibits storage of data on own computer, all my photographs and messages are on Facebook or GMail
  • Spam/Young people/Trolls
  • Trolls
  • Lack of uniform APIs
  • Digg
  • Facebook/MySpace

The anonymous nature of the Internet allows people to think they can do whatever they want to whomever they want without consequences. Unfortunately, they're usually right about that.

So, because of this, people act so stupidly and immature on the Internet because, in reality, they can be whoever they want to be.

and what is wrong with this? don't you think that Emo chicks that have to post over 9000 videos about how much Christianity sucks deserves to be attacked by a shit load of random users on how fat and ugly she is? this way, she can cry and never post another shit filled atheist rant again.

Umm... No, anonymity isn't a problem with every aspect of the internet, but it does cause problems in certain areas. There are some parts of the internet where you want to stay anonymous, but people do act differently when people know who they are.

The internet is plagued with human nature. My working definition for human nature in this specific case is as follows: People figure out how something works, like the internet or CD. Then they figure out how to bend the rules to meet their needs (whatever those needs are). Some people on the internet decided that flash met their needs and so flash proliferated. I decided that CD met my needs so JC proliferated ;)

Copyright, Censorship, and Politics.

Copyright because the internet and the machine using it are inherently designed to share information or to make it abundant and copyright seeks to protect it.

Censorship because again, the internet is for sharing information, censorship hides it.

Government because it has it's hands in both affairs. Copyright and censorship.

The internet is something that people still don't seem to get, and some are starting to understand, but some are still fighting vigorously to defend their pre-internet system... in some cases by adopting a more acceptable system that uses the internet, but to their advantage only.

Copyright seems backwards all on it's own. Why is it you can buy a CD, but you can't rip and burn it? Mix's aren't even legal anymore, look at what happened to Muxtape. People were bringing their own music (uploading it) and playing their mixes on their Myspace and shit like that. Why is it when you buy a movie you can't legally rip it? We're still paying cash for something that we have no control over, not even physically. :|

Interestingly, I find a few of the things you mentioned as being problems as being some of the stronger points of the internet; especially cloud computing and choice with regards to browsers. I could never go back to Internet Explorer ever again, and IE has only just begun to adhere to the HTML 4 standards released in 1999 due to competition from Firefox and other browsers. And why on earth would you want to store your photos on your own hard disk, where they are not highly available, lack collaborative meta-information (geo-tagging, etc), are susceptible to being lost, etc, etc?

My problem with the web would be a lack of semantic meta-information that allows machines to not only display what's on a page, but actually understand it. The semantic web needs to hurry the hell up.

Gaia. as much as i like messing with people on the internet, Gaia still holds no purpose since they're not even fun to mess with. they're wannabe trolls and should die.

otherwise, i fuckin' love the internet. anonymity is awesome since i can mess with who i want, when i want (especially on youtube and stickam, all the fags there are just asking for it).

basically, the activists who seem to really hate the opposing view are also fun to mess with. i mean, those guys who hang out at the Daily Kos and post videos on youtube that cut out important facts that would prove them wrong. yeah, fuckin' awesome to fuck with.

so, fuck Gaia, nuff said.

A survey of the preferences and problems of users of the World Wide Web shows that techniques that improve users' knowledge and ability to select and search web sites increase their satisfaction. The speed of accessing sites and locating specific knowledge are the most important considerations for the users. A menu containing a list of all the search tools will increase user satisfaction. A standard language for the tools and guidelines for their usage will improve the search process.
