What type of financial strain do migrants have on our economy?
We have a debating comp coming up tonight that we should accept fewer migrants into australia.
I read some where that the government cut the percentage by 14% when they saw the economy going down and I was wondering what actual strain would they bring on our country for moving here..... Wouldnt they just help, seeing they have to purchase cars and houses.....?

I actually just did research on the topic for a debate. My information comes from America, though. I read that over a long period of time, illegal immigrants give money back to the government because they aren't able to retire like legal citizens. They use about $80,000 less than what they pay in taxes. For legal immigrants, about 14% of people lost a job or wasn't given a job because a migrant worker got it. I don't think it has a strain on the economy for the reason you already said, but it has a strain on a few citizens who are competing for jobs with them. |
