What was the best part about Lincoln? (except Emancipation)

Lincoln is a very popular president these days.  I even noticed how Obama thinks Lincoln is his favorite president.  But why?  It can't just be the Emancipation Proclamation... I mean, Lincoln didn't even right it.  In fact, he ran as a non-extentionlist, not an abolitionist.  In fact, he was picked instead because he wasn't too much of an abolitionist.

Lincoln has done much in his canidacy, and i've stated a lot of times on why he's my favorite president, but for others, why is he considered one of the greats?

and don't say Emanciaption, since all he did was sign it in... and, it's too obvious of a choice.  Lets be creative people.

Lincoln knew very little about war going into his presidency and was fairly inexperienced. When he realized a civil war was inevitable he studied like a motherfucker...he read books and books on the subject so that he could make good decisions as commander and chief.

Here is an example of where judgment and intelligence made up for lack of experience. It is conceivable that the north could have lost the civil war had Lincoln had not decided he needed to be knowledgeable on war.

Right, it also showed how humble he really was. To have "the most important job in the world" and still have allot to learn, and learn he did. He would make fun of himself. Imagine if everyone in high office were as humble as Lincoln was.

Yeah, Martial Law and Total War are pretty underrated and unpopular ways to fight a war, especially when it's against other Americans, but as you said, he studied it like a motherfucker (well, appointed the right generals really...) and decided that these ways were the right way. I just wish more presidents would be as Militant as Lincoln was. We could have saved so many American lives. Well, now would be hard to actually have less casualties, but we'd probably have none. lulz.

New breed of politics, definately. Even though this led to backstabbing incidents.

Well, he only freed the slaves because it had to be done. He wasn't particularly progressive on racial issues. The Civil War was about keeping the Union unified.

Best part, IMO? He recognized the expertise and alternate points of view of his opponents, and gave them places in his cabinet after defeating them. We need more intellectual presidents.

To quote Walter Williams:

The recognition that slavery is a despicable institution does not require hero worship of a president who made the largest contribution to the unraveling of our Constitution. After all when it is settled by brute force that states cannot secede, as they thought they had the right to in 1787, then the federal government can ride roughshod over states and their people's right -- in a word make meaningless the Ninth and Tenth Amendments.

Well then, if not emancipation, then his hat.

Because emancipation is why everyone likes him.

He did a good job, and in our nations darkest hour.

So what do you want?

If Bush had caught Osama, and simply not screwed up all the stuff he screwed up, people would like him, because he was President when something crazy went down, and handled it well... Of course none of that paragraph happened so you know, he's not that popular.

The point is, liking someone for one thing is perfectly legitamite. Take away Emancipation, and the Civil War, then Lincoln is not much to remember.

Okay, he just signed the document, and he did not run to free the slaves, but he was for freeing the slaves, and when given the opportunity, did.

Not sure what else you want, I liked him because he gave really good speeches which inspired generations of people. I write, so I like that kind of thing. But no one would know a word he said, except historians, if it weren't for that whole emancipation thing.

his speeches were often over looked and ignored and he was described as an awkward man who had an awkward southern accent. plus, he kept on wanting to joke around. most people viewed him as a dumb southern guy. so the speech thing... eh.

Why do you have to turn a positive debate into a negative Bush rant? Its getting so old. It's time to move on now.

I agree with most of the other stuff you just said though.

Emancipation was not even a positive thing, the bill only freed the slaves living in teh free north, so they were already free. Lincoln only made the proclamation to make the war about slavery, rather than state's rights, so that the british would join on their side (or atleast, not join on the south's side) as the british were anti-slavery.

His beard and his hat. They looked very good on him.

so far, from what i got out of this, is that people either

1. don't know about his policies

or

2. don't agree with what Lincoln did on the most part

really, andsoccer is the only one who made an acceptable response... what exactly he learned... idk. but he said SOMETHING!
