I think it was primarily ethnic and political rivalries, which typically are the cause for every war. From Wikipedia, " war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia was considered inevitable, as Austria-Hungary’s influence waned and the Pan-Slavic movement grew. The rise of ethnic nationalism coincided with the growth of Serbia, where anti-Austrian sentiment was perhaps most fervent. Austria-Hungary had occupied the former Ottoman province of Bosnia-Herzegovina, which had a large Serb population, in 1878. It was formally annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908. Increasing nationalist sentiment also coincided with the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Russia supported the Pan-Slavic movement, motivated by ethnic and religious loyalties and a rivalry with Austria dating back to the Crimean War. Recent events such as the failed Russian-Austrian treaty and a century-old dream of a warm water port also motivated St. Petersburg." 2

Howard Zinn puts forward the argument in A People's History of the United States that the recession that we entered the war to expand our economic influence in the world and open up foreign markets. An influence in the economic decision was the recession that was occurring at the time. Once we entered the war, our banks started lending money and we started selling arms and supplies to our allies. 1

I believe the most important cause of "The Great War" is Nationalism because it cause the competition because there were try to show there country is better then soon or later the nations took it to far and the countries took it too far and tryed to show there army is bigger and better then from there it led to war there will never be a military draft or an increase in army or good if nations didnt why to compete with each other 1

I think the greatest cause is when everyone had an arms race. Everyone tried to get the best weopons and at the fastest times. We also had a lot of military drafts(not in the United States) and are trade deminished. We also didn't want equal power. They thought it was determineed by race. I think that Nationalism had the greatest affect because everyone wanted power. -1
