The Great War occured because of the European states' rivalries with each other. They all tried to have more power than each other, and they all tried to have bigger armies than the rest of their competitors.

I think it was primarily ethnic and political rivalries, which typically are the cause for every war.

From Wikipedia, " war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia was considered inevitable, as Austria-Hungary’s influence waned and the Pan-Slavic movement grew. The rise of ethnic nationalism coincided with the growth of Serbia, where anti-Austrian sentiment was perhaps most fervent. Austria-Hungary had occupied the former Ottoman province of Bosnia-Herzegovina, which had a large Serb population, in 1878. It was formally annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908. Increasing nationalist sentiment also coincided with the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Russia supported the Pan-Slavic movement, motivated by ethnic and religious loyalties and a rivalry with Austria dating back to the Crimean War. Recent events such as the failed Russian-Austrian treaty and a century-old dream of a warm water port also motivated St. Petersburg."

i think that the most important cause of "The Great War" is power because they were fighting just to see who was more powerful

I think the most important cause of this War was that their was too much competition between the countries; One wanted to be better than the other.

The struggle for power of all kinds is what started the great war. The instability of mankind is what causes all wars. The greedy and lust for power, control for all things.

Howard Zinn puts forward the argument in A People's History of the United States that the recession that we entered the war to expand our economic influence in the world and open up foreign markets. An influence in the economic decision was the recession that was occurring at the time. Once we entered the war, our banks started lending money and we started selling arms and supplies to our allies.

Well, that might be a reason the US entered the war, but that's different than a cause of the Great War (maybe some don't know its known as WWI?). The Great War was already on before the US entered.

I believe the most important cause of "The Great War" is Nationalism because it cause the competition because there were try to show there country is better then soon or later the nations took it to far and the countries took it too far and tryed to show there army is bigger and better then from there it led to war there will never be a military draft or an increase in army or good if nations didnt why to compete with each other

I think what started the war was mostly nationalism and the hate they had agaist other places. most wars start like that just cause of something that another state said or do. then again some wars where wort it.

i think the whole assination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand started the whole war. if that wouldnt have happend then the series of fast-moving events that transformed into full-scale war would have never happend.

I think the greatest cause is when everyone had an arms race. Everyone tried to get the best weopons and at the fastest times. We also had a lot of military drafts(not in the United States) and are trade deminished. We also didn't want equal power. They thought it was determineed by race. I think that Nationalism had the greatest affect because everyone wanted power.

Fear, greed and ignorance - just like every other war.

The only reason war occurs is to just gain more power for there states.
